Barry Manilow has opened up about his cancer battle<\/p>\n
The 82-year-old crooner went public with his diagnosis late last year revealing he needed to postpone his upcoming concert dates so he could undergo surgery to remove a cancerous spot from one of his lungs. Barry has now credited his quick-thinking doctor with saving his life by ordering a scan on his lungs as a precaution after hearing about recent bouts of bronchitis.<\/p>\n
Barry told PEOPLE magazine: “If he [the doctor] hadn\u2019t done that [ordered the scan], man … He saved my life, because there\u2019s no symptoms for what I had.<\/p>\n
“I could go on, nothing hurt – but they found the dot in my lung. They called me and said: ‘Could be cancer.’ That\u2019s a bad word. <\/p>\n
“Not me. F*** you. I can\u2019t have cancer’ …<\/p>\n
\n“They don\u2019t even know how long I had this thing sitting on me. It could have been years. If it had gone any further, then I would be up s*** creek. It just so happened that it hadn\u2019t spread, and boy oh boy, I thought I might be dying.”<\/p>\n
\nBarry underwent an operation to remove part of his lung and spent seven days in an intensive care unit recovering until he was deemed well enough to go home.<\/p>\n
\nThe singer insisted he barely remembers his stay in hospital but feels lucky that his ordeal is now over and he doesn’t have to endure any further treatment.<\/p>\n
\nHe told the publication: “I don\u2019t remember it [the hospital stay], thank goodness, because it was a nightmare. I\u2019m one of the lucky ones; I don\u2019t have to have chemo, radiation and all that stuff.”<\/p>\n
\nBarry went on to insist the terrifying health battle made him re-evaluate his life and he’s now looking to the future and getting back to performing.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “It has really, really made me take stock of my life. This made me stop and think about: Have I done what I wanted to do, and have I made people happy? Have I been a good friend? <\/p>\n
\n“All of those cornball things that I\u2019ve read for all of my life, I started to think about that, too. It really did stop me in my tracks. And the answers are yes. And as a matter of fact, there are more yeses than I ever thought …<\/p>\n
\n“This really rocked me but I\u2019m getting stronger.”<\/p>\n
\nIt comes after Barry was forced to postpone the start of his upcoming arena tour following a “very depressing” meeting with his surgeon in which he realised he would not be fully recovered in time.<\/p>\n
\nIn a post on Instagram, the singer wrote: \u201cHi Everyone. Barry here. Just got home from visiting the surgeon. Very depressing visit. <\/p>\n
\n“I told him that I have been using the treadmill three times a day (I have) but that I still couldn’t sing more than three songs in a row before I had to stop. <\/p>\n
\n“But I was sure that I would be able to do the Arena shows in a few weeks. He shook his head. He looked at me and then he looked at the floor. \u2018What?\u2019 I said.<\/p>\n
\n“He said, \u2018Barry, you won’t be ready to do a 90 minute show. Your lungs aren’t ready yet. You’re in great shape considering what you’ve been through, but your body isn’t ready. You shouldn’t do the first Arena shows. You won’t make it through.\u2019 <\/p>\n
\n“Well, I had a feeling he’d say that. Deep down, I wanted to go back-but my body knew what my heart didn’t want to admit: I wasn’t ready.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nBarry went on to share the rescheduled dates and promised his fans that he is doing everything he can to get back on stage. <\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cI’m so sorry I have to reschedule the first batch of Arena shows from February 27th – March 17. \u201cHe said I could likely do the Vegas shows at the very end of March and the second batch of Arena shows beginning in April.”<\/p>\n
