Chadwick Boseman and his wife Simone Ledward Boseman were ‘very confident’ that he would beat cancer<\/p>\n
The Black Panther actor passed away at the age of 43 following a private battle with the disease in 2020 and Simone has recalled how they were both “very confident” that he would overcome the disease.<\/p>\n
Simone told TV show Today on Friday (20.03.26): “To us, it was going to be a challenging moment, but something that he would come out on the other side of and be fine. And they would do a surgery, and he would do some chemo afterward, and he would be OK. <\/p>\n
“And there wasn’t much talk at all of the possibility of him not being OK on the other side of that.”<\/p>\n
Simone explained that the prospect of Chadwick losing his battle with the disease felt “like a betrayal of faith”, although she wishes that the pair would have discussed it now.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “There are a lot of moments where I look back on that time and wish that we had been able to find a way to talk about that.”<\/p>\n
\nSimone recalled how she and Chadwick were both struck by the suddenness of his cancer diagnosis in 2016.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “I didn’t know that he was experiencing anything until he had already been to the doctor twice. It all seemed to come about very suddenly. It was a matter of weeks that he started not feeling well.”<\/p>\n
\nThe Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom star’s death came as a shock to the wider world who were unaware of his cancer diagnosis but Simone explained that the decision to keep his illness private was deliberate.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “Chad was not a person that would have wanted to be treated any differently because people knew that he was sick. <\/p>\n
\n“The work is what was keeping him moving, so he didn’t want the work to suffer just because he was sick. He didn’t want to be handled with kid gloves because people thought he wasn’t going to be able to do his job and slide underneath falling cabinets and run across fields.”<\/p>\n
\nSimone explained that time has eased some of the grief following her husband’s passing, although it still remains a “painful” process almost six years on.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “The edges get less sharp, I think, is the best way to put it. <\/p>\n
\n“There are still edges and there are still a lot of painful moments. But I think it becomes easier to find the love in those moments, as well. You become more accustomed to carrying the weight of grief. But it doesn’t go away.”<\/p>\n
