The BBC Radio 1 presenter is attempting to complete a 1,000km ride from Weymouth to Edinburgh in eight days to raise money for Comic Relief, and he was stunned by his surprise royal guest, who hopped on thetwo-seater bike just outside of Doncaster and cycled with him through the countryside in South Yorkshire.<\/p>\n
William praised Greg for going through “a bit of pain” to help others.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cWhat you\u2019ve done is set an example about helping out. That\u2019s the thing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s volunteering some of your time, putting yourself through a bit of pain at the same time, and supporting others. It\u2019s something we do very well in this country, but we don\u2019t really shout about it enough.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThis challenge helps everyone see that. And it\u2019s an amazing team effort. Huge well done, Greg.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWilliam hilariously claimed he was just a royal “lookalike” as they cycled past a school.<\/p>\n
\nGreg shouted to cheering crowds: “It’s Prince William!”<\/p>\n
\nBut he added: \u201cThey just don\u2019t believe it\u2019s him. Why would they believe it?\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHis regal ride partner quipped: “Exactly, they just think you\u2019ve lost it. He\u2019s hallucinating!\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe then shouted: “It\u2019s a lookalike.”<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking after William’s departure, Greg admitted he was nervous when he realised he would be riding with the prince – who he worked with last month on a BBC Radio 1 mental health special – and admitted it was “the hardest [he had] gripped the handlebars” since he began the challenge.<\/p>\n
\nHe jokingly added to fellow BBC Radio 1 presenters Sam MacGregor and Danni Diston: \u201cI didn\u2019t kill the future king.”<\/p>\n
\nThe 40-year-old broadcaster – who is four days into the challenge – wasn’t aware William would be joining him and explained he had been diverted off his route to what appeared to be a truck stop, only to find the royal waiting for him.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cI joked when we recorded a show together that he should get on the tandem, but I didn\u2019t think he\u2019d actually do it.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cTo suddenly see him standing there was completely bizarre. I can\u2019t believe I\u2019ve been trusted to carry the future king around on a tandem.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cHe didn\u2019t need to do that, but it\u2019s incredible that he\u2019s used his time to support this and help spread the message.”<\/p>\n
\nWilliam revealed during the ride that the fundraising total had passed the \u00a31 million mark, helped by a pledge from The Hunter Foundation to match donations up to that amount.<\/p>\n
