Sarah Michelle Gellar<\/a> announced the “sad” news that the network is no longer moving forward with the show.<\/p>\nRyan said on Instagram Stories: \u201cI\u2019m sure many of you have already heard the news by now. I wanted to come on here and say thank you for all of the support that you guys have given me and this show throughout the last couple months. It\u2019s been really special.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fighting back tears, she said she was \u201creally proud\u201d of the project and disappointed that fans will not get to see it. <\/p>\n
She went on: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t take away from the amazing experience that I had.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI also want to say thank you to all the fans who believed in this new chapter, and who believed in me, so thank you guys. Thank you to the cast I worked with. You guys are awesome.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI guess all I want to say is we brought this back for you guys and Buffy is such a big part of all of our lives. It\u2019s not going anywhere! Who knows what the future will hold?\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHulu had announced plans for the follow-up series Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale – directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao – last year but star Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Instagram over the weekend to share that it will not be moving ahead.<\/p>\n
\nThe 48-year-old actress said: “I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.<\/p>\n
\n“I want to thank Chloe Zhao, because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”<\/p>\n
\nThe unaired series was set to star Ryan Kiera Armstrong as new slayer Nova, with Gellar appearing as Buffy on a recurring basis.<\/p>\n
\nThe original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series aired for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003 and Gellar recently confessed that she was not always interested in reprising one of her best-known roles.<\/p>\n
\nShe told ComicBook: “I actually like when people bring up that I said \u2018never\u2019, because I really felt that way. <\/p>\n
\n“So, lesson learned, first of all, young children\u2026 Never say never. Say, ‘I don\u2019t see it happening,\u2019 but don\u2019t say \u2018never’, because then you have egg on your face.”<\/p>\n
\nThe Dexter: Original Sin star continued: “But I truly thought that\u2019s where I was at. I never heard a take or a reason to do it. Then Chloe Zhao came to me, and she had the reasons, and she had the take. Also, I was in a different place. The world was in a different place. With that being said, it\u2019s still taken us four years to get to this place because I would say, ‘Yes’, and then I would call a month later and say, ‘No. No, no, no. I can\u2019t.’ I\u2019m Cameron Frye from Ferris Bueller. \u2018Again, again, again\u2026’\u201d<\/p>\n
\nGellar admits that it was Zhao’s passion that convinced her to star in the now-shelved reboot.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “Chloe Zhao came to me and not just her passion, because I\u2019ve seen people with passion before, but she knew how to go into the world. She knew what the world was, and she knew the way.<\/p>\n
\n“And that was the first time I said, ‘Maybe, could I possibly do this?’ And this went on for three years now \u2026 me and Chloe going back and forth, saying I could do it, saying I can\u2019t, and really spending the time to develop what it is and why it is.”<\/p>\n
