Sarah Michelle Gellar<\/strong> <\/a>has announced that Hulu will not \u201cmove forward\u201d with the long-awaited Buffy<\/em> reboot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me \u2013 unfortunately Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale,\u201d Gellar, 48, announced via Instagram<\/a> on Saturday, March 14. \u201cI want to thank [director] Chloe Zhao<\/strong> because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy\u2019s stylish yet affordable boots and thanks to Chloe I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cAnd this doesn\u2019t change any of that. And I promise if the apocalypse actually comes you can still beep me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Us Weekly<\/em> confirmed in February 2025 that Gellar was reprising her iconic role<\/a> in Hulu\u2019s upcoming follow-up series, described as \u201cthe next chapter in the Buffyverse\u201d following a new slayer, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong<\/strong><\/a>. Gellar famously played the vampire slayer Buffy Summers on the WB\u2019s Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 1997 to 2003.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly emotionally overwhelming,\u201d Gellar exclusively told Us<\/em> on August 27, 2025, of her feelings when stepping back onto the Buffy reboot set more than two decades after she left her vampire slaying days behind. \u201cIt\u2019s just a place I didn\u2019t know that I would find myself. While it was new, it was also incredibly familiar, and I feel very lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

While speaking to ComicBook<\/em>\u2019s Bryan Clairns<\/strong> on Friday, March 13, Gellar admitted that it took her more than a few years to come around to the idea of joining the reboot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s still taken us four years to get to this place because I would say, \u2018Yes,\u2019 and then I would call a month later and say, \u2018No. No, no, no. I can\u2019t,\u2019\u201d she explained to the outlet. \u201cI\u2019m Camerone Frye from Ferris Bueller<\/em>. \u2018Again, again, again\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cI just asked people to give me the time and understand that it took us six years to get to a sequel to Ready or Not<\/em>. When you want to do things right, it takes time.\u201d<\/p>\n
