The Canadian film, out now in theaters nationwide, achieves what few other films in the genre accomplish \u2014 it projects real menace and suggests evil is lurking right behind you.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s 2026\u2019s scariest film to date and joins recent films like <em>Hereditary<\/em> and <em>Skinamarink<\/em> as superior examples of elevated horror. But how did first-time feature film director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm3688666\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ian Tuason<\/strong><\/a> make a scary movie for the ages? And why is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/pictures\/the-sopranos-cast-where-are-they-now-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Sopranos<\/em><\/a>, HBO\u2019s classic mob series that is definitely not scary, a key influence?\n<\/p>\n<h2>What Is \u2018Undertone\u2019 About?<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"undertone | Official Trailer 2 HD | A24\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1_TRSEcMvR0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Undertone<\/em> centers around Evy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/shows\/the-handmaids-tale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em><\/a>\u2018s <strong>Nina Kiri<\/strong>), a young Canadian woman who produces a popular supernatural podcast with remote co-host Justin (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/shows\/white-lotus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The White Lotus<\/em>\u2018<\/a> <strong>Adam DiMarco<\/strong>) from her quiet Toronto home. With her mother in the last stages of an unnamed terminal illness upstairs, Evy wants nothing more than to focus on her work rather than deal with her mother\u2019s inevitable death. But when Justin finds 10 tapes that document a young couple\u2019s haunting, Evy soon realizes she can\u2019t avoid the ghosts of her past, present and uncertain future.<\/p>\n<p>If that plot description is a little vague, that\u2019s on purpose. Part of the pleasure of watching <em>Undertone<\/em> is letting Tuason slowly reveal what it\u2019s all about \u2014 and what it all means.<\/p>\n<h2>The Origins of \u2018Undertone\u2019: From Radio to a One-of-a-Kind Horror Film Experience<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4279171\" style=\"width: 900px;\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<div class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\" style=\"padding-bottom:66.714285714286%;\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"caption\"><br \/>\n Nina Kiri in Undertone.<\/span> <span class=\"credit\">Dustin Rabin \/\u00a9 A24 \/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201c[<em>Undertone<\/em>] started as a radio play. I used to listen to a lot of narrative podcasts like <strong>Mark Phillips<\/strong>\u2019 <em>Homecoming<\/em>, which was later adapted into a Prime Video show starring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/julia-roberts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Julia Roberts<\/strong><\/a>. I was big into <a href=\"https:\/\/strangehorizons.com\/wordpress\/non-fiction\/reviews\/the-black-tapes-podcast-produced-by-paul-bae-and-terry-miles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Black Tapes<\/em> [by <strong>Paul Mae<\/strong> and <strong>Terry Miles<\/strong>]<\/a>, too. I was writing the part with Justin and Evy investigating these hidden messages in these audio files when COVID hit, and then my parents got sick. What would happen if something similar happened to me when I was taking care of my mom? That feeling of your home safety being weaponized against you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was my answer to the next question I had: What does Evy do in between recording her podcasts? Oh, she\u2019s taking care of her dying mom. Next thing I know, we\u2019re filming.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Sounds of Terror<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UNDERTONE (2026) CLIP &quot;Did You Hear That?&quot; (HD) SUPERNATURAL\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gWrkkQcWqGI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Undertone<\/em> differs from most horror movies in that it relies more on sound to tell its story and generate its scares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original script had more sound direction than camera direction,\u201d Tuason admits. \u201cI specifically wrote \u2018the baby cries to the rear right\u2019 in the script, and you hear that. I related everything to the frame. It\u2019s easier for the sound editor to know what I\u2019m thinking [and what I want].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was heavily involved in the sound mix, so I just started pointing in different directions and advised them to put a bang [at a key moment in the story]. I got that idea from my background in virtual reality. I made a lot of VR content, which requires you to create a 3D soundscape. For the bulk of the movie, you\u2019re not sure what\u2019s happening to Evy. Is she imagining things? Or is she really experiencing an actual haunting, something she\u2019s always been skeptical of believing in?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was intentional,\u2019 Tuason confesses. \u201cI wanted to maintain a feeling [of uncertainty.] What\u2019s happening in the movie? [What Evy goes through] may or may not be paranormal, and you don\u2019t know for sure because a faucet could turn on by itself, right? That sound she hears upstairs could be the wood expanding in the floorboards. Even when the lights turn off, and Evy sees a figure in the dark, it\u2019s brief, and then the lights turn back on, and the figure is gone. Eschewing blood, guts and any need for a clear explanation, <em>Undertone<\/em> marinates in the terror of ambiguity. You can even call it \u201celevated horror,\u201d even though <a href=\"https:\/\/horrorobsessive.com\/2021\/09\/04\/why-elevated-horror-is-an-unnecessary-and-elitist-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that term has some negative connotations among genre fans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just discovered that \u2018elevated horror\u2019 was an offensive term to some people. That surprised me. There\u2019s no agreed-upon definition of what it actually means. Some people take it like \u2018my horror is better than yours.\u2019 And I can\u2019t really define it either, but I know it when I see it, like <em>Hereditary<\/em> or <em>The Babadook<\/em>.
