Live on April 27, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. <span class=\"image-caption-credit\"> (Photo by Rich Fury\/Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the latest episode of <em>The Kelly Clarkson Show<\/em>, Clarkson revealed that the reality competition never delivered the prizes that were advertised when she won the series back in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, Kelly says she did not receive the $1 million prize that viewers believed the winner would take home.<\/p>\n<p>Because, producers explained, that wasn\u2019t <em>really<\/em> the prize. No, you didn\u2019t. They lied. It was like a million dollars\u2019 worth of investment in you,\u201d she recalled (via <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/12\/entertainment\/kelly-clarkson-reveals-lying-american-idol-stiffed-her-on-1-million-prize-new-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Page Six<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>According to Clarkson, the promised \u201cmillion dollars\u201d was actually a million dollars\u2019 worth of investment in her career, rather than a literal check.<\/p>\n<p>So yes \u2014 technically a million dollars. Just not the kind you can put in your bank account.<\/p>\n<p>And that wasn\u2019t the only disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>Clarkson also says she was promised a brand-new car after winning the competition. But that never showed up either.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the singer says she desperately needed one because her own vehicle had been damaged \u2014 and she couldn\u2019t afford the deductible to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said you get a car. And I needed it because my car was bashed in, and I couldn\u2019t afford the deductible. And then \u2014 no! Especially after Clarkson later learned that Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken received a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, two vehicles \u2014 one for him, and one for his mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, what the f\u2014?\u201d Clarkson joked while recalling the moment she found out.<\/p>\n<p>The revelation came after Rausch mentioned that he\u2019s still waiting to receive the prize money from his own reality show victory.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a situation Clarkson can sadly relate to. So maybe Rob shouldn\u2019t hold his breath.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s worth noting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehollywoodgossip.com\/2026\/02\/kelly-clarkson-show-to-end-7-seasons-host-says-she-must-prioritize-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clarkson\u2019s career turned out just fine <\/a>despite the questionable prize package.<\/p>\n<p>After winning <em>American Ido<\/em>l, she went on to become one of the show\u2019s most successful alumni, scoring numerous hit singles, multiple Grammy Awards, and a long-running daytime talk show.<\/p>\n<p>Still, a free car probably would have been nice.
