Liza Minnelli has revealed details of a turbulent relationship with filmmaker Martin Scorsese<\/p>\n
The 79-year-old actress and singer uses her new memoir to describe their fling, which she said happened during the making of their 1977 musical film New York, New York, and which she describes as a secret affair shaped by volatile emotions and escalating drug use.<\/p>\n
Liza says in her memoir Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! about falling for director Martin, now 83, while they were working together on the film and he was deep in drug abuse: \u201cAs we filmed, Marty became a heavier and heavier user of cocaine.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt seemed that it was no longer recreational for either of us. It was day and night. On the set, in between takes, and when we went out in the evening.\u201d<\/p>\n
Liza added: \u201cWe were constant companions and I was right there beside him.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cLine by line, Marty claimed the drug helped his creative juices. Sure it did. Or is that just one more fabulous lie you tell yourself when you\u2019re in the grip of substance use?\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe memoir also recounts a confrontation between Martin and Liza in Greenwich Village after he heard rumours she was also involved with ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. <\/p>\n
\nLiza writes Martin shouted: \u201cHow can you do this to me. How can you do this to me!\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe acknowledges in the book that she did have a relationship with Mikhail during that period.<\/p>\n
\nAt the time of their affair, both were married \u2013\u00a0Liza to her second husband Jack Haley Jr., who died in 2001 aged 67, and Martin to his second wife Julia Cameron. <\/p>\n
\nLiza writes in the book that the relationship was driven by what she describes as \u201camour fou\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nShe said the phrase refers to \u201cThe French term for a passionate relationship that becomes a self destructive obsession\u201d adding the relationship \u201cbecomes a powerful hypnotic drug in every way\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nThe production of New York, New York is described as increasingly difficult. <\/p>\n
\nIts budget reportedly spiralled from $7 million to $12 million and the shoot extended to 22 weeks instead of the planned 14.<\/p>\n
\nLiza also recounts how she later asked Martin to direct her Broadway musical The Act, despite his lack of theatre directing experience. <\/p>\n
\nThe arrangement ended when she decided to dismiss him from the production.<\/p>\n
\nLiza writes that the decision \u201cdamn near killed me and broke my heart\u201d.<\/p>\n
