More than a decade after James Cameron<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s Avatar<\/em><\/a> became the highest-grossing film of all time in 2009, audiences are getting ready to return to Pandora.<\/p>\n \u201cIt sounds kind of nuts, the process,\u201d the director told Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> in December 2021 about the long-awaited sequel. \u201cI mean, if Avatar<\/em> hadn\u2019t made so much damn money, we\u2019d never do this \u2014 because it\u2019s kind of crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n Avatar 2: The Way of Water<\/em> will take place in and around the ocean, which conservation advocate Cameron<\/a> has long been fascinated with. \u201cI do the ocean thing when I\u2019m not making movies,\u201d he added. \u201cSo if I could combine my two greatest loves \u2014 one of which is ocean exploration; the other, feature filmmaking \u2014 why wouldn\u2019t I?\u201d<\/p>\n The original Avatar<\/em> introduced audiences to the Na\u2019vi, the people who lived in the rainforests of Pandora who were attempting to protect their home as humans invaded to mine the valuable mineral unobtanium. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington<\/strong><\/a>), a disabled Marine who becomes involved in the Avatar Program with the intent to make peace with the Na\u2019vi warriors, soon discovers the widespread damage that the military is causing to Pandora. And it wasn’t even close,” he told EW<\/em>.<\/p>\n Most of the cast got certified as scuba divers, and all of them worked with professionals to learn to free dive and hold their breath for minutes at a time.
