Harry Styles learned how to \u2018be more private\u2019 after launching his solo career<\/p>\n
Reflecting on how fame during his years in One Direction encouraged him and his bandmates to share large parts of their personal lives with the public, the 32-year-old singer made the admission while discussing his life in spotlight after joining the group.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the Q with Tom Power podcast, Harry said: \u201cI think generally my experience of kind of being like in the public domain is that obviously you learn a lot about kind of what you’re comfortable with and what you’re not comfortable with.\u201d<\/p>\n
Harry added: \u201cAnd I think when I started in the band, we were kind of encouraged to like give a lot of ourselves away, you know, to kind of like let people get to know you.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I think that finishing that, and then when I started working on my own stuff, I felt like there were parts of that where I was kind of just learning what I was comfortable with and trying to like have kind of parts of my like personal life be more private.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHarry rose to global fame aged 16 as a member of One Direction alongside bandmates Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne \u2013\u00a0who died aged 31 in 2024 \u2013\u00a0and Zayn Malik. <\/p>\n
\nThe group became one of the most commercially successful boybands in modern pop before Zayn left in 2015. <\/p>\n
\nIts remaining members announced an indefinite hiatus in 2016 and each later pursued solo music careers. <\/p>\n
\nHarry said the shift to working alone helped him reassess the boundaries of fame and decide what parts of his personal life he wanted to keep out of public view.<\/p>\n
\nIn a separate recent interview with Runner\u2019s World, Harry spoke about the isolating aspects of fame and described how running became a way for him to step away from the pressures of global celebrity.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cOver the years, I had to say no to everything I was invited to, whether it was a friend\u2019s birthday, a trip somewhere amazing, an opening.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI started to wonder if I was saying no because I really was so busy or because it was more comfortable than saying yes.\u201cWhen you close yourself off to protect yourself from people who might bring negativity into your life, you\u2019re also missing out on positive experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAfter completing his 173-date Love On Tour in July 2023, Harry took time away from music to travel, spend time with friends and family and experience events as a fan rather than a performer. <\/p>\n
\nDuring that period he attended Glastonbury, spent time in Berlin\u2019s club scene and travelled to Rome to witness the announcement of a new Pope.<\/p>\n
\nHarry also running became a personal space for reflection during that period.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cBecause in some of those new experiences, there\u2019s just so much stimulation, right? So many people, and it\u2019s just so loud.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cSo then running also became my processing place for all of that. Really being by myself.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhen you\u2019re training for a marathon, which is the loneliest part, you just kind of set out for a run, and three hours later you come back.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut there\u2019s a real synergy between that and electronic music. It\u2019s kind of hypnotic and becomes like a mantra almost.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHarry said running also allowed him to move through public spaces without attracting constant attention.<\/p>\n
\nHe went on: \u201cWell, the main thing is that you\u2019re always moving. You can turn a corner wherever.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI think with people who see me, it\u2019s a bit more \u2018Was that\u2026?\u2019 rather than, \u2018Oh look it\u2019s him!\u2019 And by that time, you\u2019re already gone.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cFor me, one of the things that can be complicated is that, as an artist, say if you\u2019re a novelist or a musician or a filmmaker, you\u2019re an observer \u2013 but when you become a known person, you become the observed.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cSo something I love so much about running is the simplicity of it. You are the observer once more, and you can go about your day in the most naked form.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s just you, alone, moving through the world. That\u2019s what I love about it: You don\u2019t need anything, just a pair of shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHarry recently returned to performing after several years away from the stage, performing in Manchester on Friday (06.03.26) to coincide with the release of his fourth album Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally. <\/p>\n
\nHarry is set to tour the album on his Together Together tour, which includes 67 dates across seven cities, with residencies planned in London, Amsterdam and New York.<\/p>\n
