Bridgerton <\/i>star Nicola Coughlan<\/strong> <\/a>is getting real about being subjected to body-shaming comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what was really bizarre was, when I was shooting that series, I was exercising a lot because I knew I had to,\u201d Coughlan, 39, told Elle UK<\/a> <\/i>in a Wednesday, March 4, profile, when asked about filming her nude scenes. \u201cI had lost a bunch of weight, [and] I was probably a size 10 and one of the corsets was a size 8.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cAnd then people talked about how I was plus size and I was like, \u2018How f***ed are we that I am the biggest woman you want to see on screen?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Coughlan stars as Penelope Bridgerton (n\u00e9e Featherington) on Netflix\u2019s Bridgerton<\/i><\/a>. The actress led season 3, which chronicled Penelope\u2019s love story<\/a> with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton<\/strong>) amid her growing career as then-anonymous gossip columnist Lady Whistledown.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBridgerton star Nicola Coughlan is setting the record straight on speculation about her appearance on the Netflix series. \u201cI saw some trolls. They were like, \u2018They photoshopped your waist,\u2019 and I was like, \u2018No, they did not,\u2019\u201d Coughlan, 37, told People in an interview published on Wednesday, June 12. Season 3 of the period romance, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Despite criticism of her body, the actress has also inspired another cohort of fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember this really drunk girl once talking to me in a bathroom being like, \u2018I loved [Bridgerton<\/i>] because of your body,\u2019 and started talking about my body,\u201d Coughlan recalled to the outlet. \u201cI was like, \u2018I want to die. I hate this so much.\u2019 It\u2019s really hard when you work on something for months and months of your life, you don\u2019t see your family, you really dedicate yourself and then it comes down to what you look like. It\u2019s so f***ing boring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coughlan has long been a fierce body positive advocate, even requesting her nude scene in Bridgerton<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI specifically asked for certain lines and moments to be included,\u201d she told Stylist <\/i>magazine<\/a> in May 2024. \u201cThere\u2019s one scene where I\u2019m very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice. It just felt like the biggest \u2018f*** you\u2019 to all the conversation surrounding my body. It was amazingly empowering.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Coughlan, she \u201cfelt beautiful\u201d in the moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought, \u2018When I\u2019m 80, I want to look back on this and remember how f***ing hot I looked!\u2019\u201d she quipped to the magazine.<\/p>\n
