{"id":226632,"date":"2026-03-05T17:20:03","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T17:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/05\/united-now-bans-passengers-from-playing-video-audio-without-headphones-the-points-guy\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T17:20:03","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T17:20:03","slug":"united-now-bans-passengers-from-playing-video-audio-without-headphones-the-points-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/05\/united-now-bans-passengers-from-playing-video-audio-without-headphones-the-points-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"United now bans passengers from playing video, audio without headphones &#8211; The Points Guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>If you fly a lot, you&#8217;ve probably experienced it: You&#8217;re settled in for a flight and hear the unmistakable sound of TikTok or Instagram reels blaring from the phone of your neighbor \u2014 who either didn&#8217;t have headphones or didn&#8217;t care to use them.<\/p>\n<p>Do that on one of the largest U.S. airlines and it could get you kicked off the plane \u2014 and potentially barred from flying in the future.<\/p>\n<p>United Airlines now counts listening to video or audio without headphones as an explicit violation of its policies.<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago-based carrier on Feb. 27 added the following line to its <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.united.com\/en\/us\/fly\/contract-of-carriage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Contract of Carriage<\/a><\/span>, the long list of terms of conditions that lay out passenger rights and rules:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Passengers who fail to use headphones while listening to audio or video content,&#8221; the document states.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"jsx-3874346954 tpg-figure\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:0\" class=\"jsx-2453190082 full-width-auto-height-image\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"jsx-3874346954 figcaption\">A United Airlines plane on final descent into Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C. SEAN CUDAHY\/THE POINTS GUY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That provision is among the reasons why United now says it would be entitled to refuse transport for a passenger on a permanent or temporary basis.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to TPG Thursday, the airline noted the move was tied to its <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/united-airlines-starlink-wifi-rollout-milestone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expansion of on-board Starlink Wi-Fi<\/a><\/span>, which is free for MileagePlus members and (theoretically) fast enough to make video calls and streaming feasible \u2014 though, again, it&#8217;s not allowed without headphones.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve always encouraged customers to use headphones when listening to audio content \u2013 and our Wi-Fi rules already remind customers to use headphones,&#8221; a spokesperson said. &#8220;With the expansion of Starlink, it seemed like a good time to make that even clearer by adding it to the contract of carriage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">A first among major US airlines<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">United&#8217;s specific ban against the cacophony of headphone-less content seems to be the only one of its kind at a major U.S. airline.<\/h2>\n<p>TPG on Thursday reviewed the contracts of carriage at several of the four largest U.S. airlines. SEAN CUDAHY\/THE POINTS GUY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The crackdown on electronic devices making noise inflight isn&#8217;t surprising, as short-form videos flood social media sites and smartphones and tablets have given passengers an ever-increasing array of ways to listen and watch content on the go.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">Earbuds available for free<\/h2>\n<p>For United&#8217;s part, we should mention that the carrier has seatback screens at every seat on most of its mainline planes.
