Billy Porter<\/strong><\/a> is looking back at his terrifying health battle.<\/p>\n Back in September, the 56-year-old Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner was forced to exit his role as the Emcee in Broadway\u2019s Cabaret <\/em>after he was diagnosed with sepsis<\/a>.<\/p>\n In a new interview, Billy<\/strong> reflected on the medical emergency, revealing that he was in a coma for several days after learning that he had a kidney stone stuck in his urethra that caused him to develop the life-threatening medical condition.<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u201cWhen they got in there, there was so much puss and bile, and infection, behind the stone,\u201d Billy<\/strong> recalled on the Outlaws<\/em> podcast<\/a>, explaining that the infection led to him having a type of sepsis called urosepsis, which begins in the urinary tract and travels to the kidneys.<\/p>\n \u201cIt bubbled up and I went uroseptic in minutes,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n Billy<\/strong> had gone to the doctor for a \u201croutine check\u201d at the time, and recalled being quickly put on an ECMO machine, a form of life support, due to the severity of his condition.<\/p>\n \u201cI was dead for three days,\u201d Billy<\/strong> said. \u201cI am a miracle. I\u2019m a walking miracle.\u201d <\/p>\n However, Billy <\/strong>wasn\u2019t immediately out of the woods when he woke up for the coma. After he was taken off life support, his doctors informed him that his leg had \u201ccompartment syndrome,\u201d which he described as \u201cwhen the muscles close in on themselves and cut off the oxygen.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThey had to cut me open on either side of my leg while I was in a coma, and from my knee to my hip, and leave it open for two days so they could save my leg,\u201d he revealed.<\/p>\n Ultimately, Billy<\/strong> was able to make a full recovery.<\/p>\n \u201cI am so grateful to be here,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is such a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n He also shared some of the important life lessons he learned from his health battle.<\/p>\n \u201cAs I sat in my hospital bed, reflecting, there were a couple of things I heard. The first thing I heard was: Work smarter, not harder,\u201d Billy<\/strong> shared. \u201cThe second thing I heard was: Be obedient and answer the call. And the third thing I heard was: Don\u2019t you ever stop telling the truth again.\u201d<\/p>\n If you didn\u2019t see, Billy<\/strong> revealed that a member of the British Royal Family sent him a get-well card<\/a> when he was sick.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
