{"id":226488,"date":"2026-03-05T00:12:56","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T00:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/05\/remains-with-recognizable-face-finally-identified-as-oldest-son-of-family-who-dropped-off-the-radar-nearly-50-years-ago\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T00:12:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T00:12:56","slug":"remains-with-recognizable-face-finally-identified-as-oldest-son-of-family-who-dropped-off-the-radar-nearly-50-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/05\/remains-with-recognizable-face-finally-identified-as-oldest-son-of-family-who-dropped-off-the-radar-nearly-50-years-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"Remains with \u2018Recognizable Face\u2019 Finally Identified as Oldest Son of Family Who \u2018Dropped Off the Radar\u2019 Nearly 50 Years Ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Nearly 50 years after he went missing, authorities were finally able to determine the identity of a man who died alone hundreds of miles from home. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday (March 1), the DNA Doe Project, a group of investigative genetic genealogists, and the Virginia State Police revealed that had figured out a decades-old mystery after being unable to identify a man who died in a traffic accident on March 23, 1977 in Ashland, Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Previously referred to as Ashland John Doe, he was finally identified as 20-year-old <strong>Peter Adams<\/strong>, who had gone missing in Pennsylvania. <\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"hidearticle\"><em>Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><span id=\"more-2186378\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a news release from the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnadoeproject.org\/case\/ashland-john-doe-1977\/\" onclick=\"getOutboundLink(&#039;https:\/\/dnadoeproject.org\/case\/ashland-john-doe-1977\/&#039;); return false;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DNA Doe Project<\/a>, experts noted that <strong>Adams <\/strong>was from Illinois but had been reported missing on March 17, 1977. <\/p>\n<p>Six days, a man died after being hit \u201cby a truck on the I-95\u2033 in the early hours of the morning. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite having a recognizable face, he could not be identified,\u201d the release read, noting that all authorities at the time had been able to determine was that he was \u201ca Caucasian man between 20-25 years old.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>At the time of his death, \u201che wore blue jeans, a western-style shirt, and a jean jacket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DNA Doe Project began working on the case at the behest of the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Early on, they were able to determine that <strong>Adams<\/strong> had roots in \u201cPeoria County, Illinois, as well as recent Polish heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How, team co-leader <strong>Eryk Jan Grzeszkowiak<\/strong> described his family tree as \u201ccomplex.\u201d It required them to reference trees tracing his ancestors back to \u201cPoland, Germany and Switzerland, amongst others.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>One week after taking the case, they found \u201ca husband and wife who both had familial connections to Ashland John Doe\u2019s DNA matches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their oldest of six children \u201cseemed to have dropped off the radar in the 1970s,\u201d and they found \u201cno evidence of him being alive past 1977.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Additional test on the behalf of the Virginia State Police helped confirm the hypothesis. <\/p>\n<p>Captain <strong>Brien Frey<\/strong> of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation\u2019s Richmond Field Office commended the findings that took place nearly 49 years after <strong>Adams <\/strong>died.
