Christina Applegate’s memoir You with the Sad Eyes was released today. One of anecdotes in her book reveals that when she was 17 years old, she attended the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards with 25 year old Brad Pitt (“he wasn\u2019t yet THE Brad Pitt,” she said) who was an unknown actor in her extended friend group. Brad drove Christina, her mom, and her best friend Lori to the event. She said, “I felt so powerful and sure of myself for once that when the awards show was over, I left with Sebastian Bach.” Brad still had to drive her mom and friend home afterward. He was in a bad mood and almost got into a fight at a gas station on the drive home.<\/p>\n

Christina said that she and Brad did not talk for several years after the incident. She also said that many years later, “two of his movie star girlfriends asked me if it was true that I was the girl who had left Brad behind at the MTV Video Music Awards. Brad had apparently told both of them separately that he was still mad at me.” She said eventually she and Brad patched things up and “we agreed that I’d been a kid and even though he’d deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row.” Things didn’t work out with Sebastian after she found out that he had a long term partner and a 1 year old child.<\/p>\n

When she was 16, she guest starred on an episode of 21 Jump Street. While she was in Vancouver, director Kim Manners (who was 20 years older than Christina) invited her to his house “out in the woods.” [<\/span><\/svg>sensitive content<\/a><\/b>]<\/span><\/span>She said: “I remember sitting, dangling my legs into the hot tub, and then my memory turns to total darkness. Everything is missing until I found myself scrambling up some stairs, with no idea where I was. I had marks all over my butt, but that\u2019s all I knew. Clearly, something bad had happened, but to this day I have no idea the full extent of it, though it\u2019s not hard to imagine what that guy did to me.” She said she never told anyone about this incident. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She dated Anthony Kiedis when she was 17 and he was 26. For their first date, he took her and her mom to the farmers’ market. Christina said, “That’s how punk rock we were.” Her favorite thing that he said to her was about how he sometimes avoided using deodorant, telling her, “A horse will know me before they will know you.” She said everyone called him Antoine. After he dumped her, he asked her to do his laundry.<\/p>\n

She was in a long term abusive relationship when she got pregnant at the age of 19 and subsequently had an abortion. [<\/span><\/svg>sensitive content<\/a><\/b>]<\/span><\/span>One year, she brought this boyfriend to her grandmother’s home for Christmas. When things got physical, her mom stepped in. Christina called him an asshole and then he pulled her out of the bathroom. “He comes barging in, grabs me around the neck, and drags me by my legs across the hallway, back to the bedroom, where the lights are still out. There he pins me to the bed, my pants still around my ankles. He\u2019s livid, lost to his anger, shaking with rage, fuming and foaming as though his life is on the line.” Her family members were “horrified” and called the police. Christina did not press charges, and her boyfriend was taken to a motel. She went with him, much to the dismay of her mother, and things allegedly escalated once again at the motel.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I hear him punch the mirror, hear the shattering glass. I watch as he brings out a shard. I feel something cold on my neck.” She said that he made her undress and “get on top of him.” Instead of doing anything, he let her leave. She said: “He seemed to take pleasure in making me truly believe he was going to kill me. My all-consuming fear appeared to satisfy him.” During another fight, he threw a cigarette lighter at her and then poured an “entire bottle of tequila” down her throat. This was the incident that convinced her to finally end the relationship. <\/p>\n

After breaking up with her abusive boyfriend, she had a brief relationship with a pre-Buffy\/Angel David Boreanaz, who had guest starred on her show Married…with Children. She said he made her feel safe and that he was “the reason I was finally able to get back to normal.” <\/p>\n
