Sinners<\/em><\/a> actress Wunmi Mosaku<\/strong> is weighing in on the N-word controversy<\/a> that overshadowed the 2026 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards.<\/p>\n

Tourette\u2019s activist John Davidson<\/strong> shouted a racial slur on February 22 while Mosaku\u2019s costars Michael B. Jordan<\/strong> and Delroy Lindo<\/strong> presented the award for best visual effects. Davidson, who inspired the BAFTA-winning film I Swear<\/em>, was in the audience for the ceremony and had repeated outbursts due to involuntary tics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was there and it was painful to have that celebration, kind of, really tainted for me,\u201d Mosaku, 39, told Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> on Sunday, March 1, at the 2026 Actor Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cYou know, I have no hard feelings toward John Davidson at all. Like, he has a condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnd the Oscar goes to \u2026 mess. Since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held its first awards show in 1929, the ceremony has faced plenty of scandals and criticism. The Oscar nominee said she was most concerned by both BAFTA\u2019s and awards broadcaster BBC\u2019s handling of the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like BAFTA has a lot of lessons to learn,\u201d Mosaku said. \u201cI think [Sinners<\/em> costar] Jayme Lawson<\/strong> said it yesterday, it felt, like, exploitative and performative to have someone there without the full protection of everybody, including him and anyone in that audience. There were children in that audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mosaku then pinpointed the BBC\u2019s decision to air the racial slur in the U.K., despite the awards ceremony airing on a two-hour delay and other language deemed offensive being removed from the broadcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s one thing, and then the BBC is a whole other thing,\u201d the actress said. \u201cThat\u2019s the bit that kind of kept me awake at night and brought tears to my eyes. I was like, \u2018You really chose to keep that in.\u2019 I can\u2019t understand it, and I\u2019m not sure I can forgive it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the awards, Davidson, 54, told Variety<\/em> that he had apologized to Jordan, 39, and Lindo<\/a>, 73.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen socially unacceptable words come out, the guilt and shame on the part of the person with the condition is often unbearable and causes enormous distress,\u201d Davidson said in an interview on Tuesday, February 24. \u201cI can\u2019t begin to explain how upset and distraught I have been as the impact from Sunday sinks in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u200b\u200bThe only time I became aware that my tic had reached the stage was when Delroy and Michael B. Jordan appeared to look up from their role as presenters, and soon after that I decided to leave the auditorium,\u201d Davidson explained.<\/p>\n

Davidson serves as the inspiration for the BAFTA-winning I Swear<\/em>, which explores Tourette syndrome. Tourette\u2019s \u201cis a neurological disorder that may cause sudden unwanted and uncontrolled rapid and repeated movements or vocal sounds called tics,\u201d per the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.<\/p>\n
