The 42-year-old actress was first diagnosed with the condition – which sees non-cancerous growths developing in or around the uterus and can cause symptoms including long and heavy periods, and pain in the pelvis, back, and leg – 11 years ago, and she admitted things are worse this time around, with few treatment options available.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Today, she said: \u201cThe first time I got the fibroids taken out, they took out 23.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd this time, I\u2019ve been informed two years ago that I have over 50.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I\u2019m being faced with the same options. Surgery or live with the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe A Quiet Place: Day One star is “notready” to decide whether to have the fibroids surgically removed because of the “big threat” to any future family plans.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI\u2019m not ready to make that decision. It\u2019s quite invasive\u2026 and it\u2019s a big threat to our reproductive organs.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nNot only does she have dozens of fibroids, some of them are very large.<\/p>\n
\nLupita said: \u201cWhen you have fibroids, doctors usually use fruit to explain to you what size your fibroids are. So your fibroid could be the size of a grape. My biggest fibroid is the size of an orange.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe 12 Years a Slave actress recalled feeling “shame” and fear when she was first diagnosed with fibroids, but she’s found “community” since opening up about her condition.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI felt shame. What did I do to cause them? And I felt very alone and quite scared for my reproductive health.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI\u2019m excited right now because speaking up has really empowered me.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI\u2019ve found community. I\u2019ve locked arms with women who have been fighting this fight for a long time.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of power in speaking up.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI spoke up and the amount of support I got hearing women say \u2018me too\u2019 and share their stories made me feel less alone and it\u2019s honestly what has bolstered me to do the work that I do now.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nLupita is now campaigning and fundraising for scientists to find less invasive ways to treat the condition.<\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cI think it\u2019s high time we speak up to ensure that this is no longer trivialized and it\u2019s no longer considered normal just because it\u2019s common.”<\/p>\n
