Hilary Duff<\/strong><\/a> is mourning the loss of her Lizzie McGuire<\/em><\/a> costar, Robert Carradine<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis one hurts. It\u2019s really hard to face this reality about an old friend,\u201d Duff, 38, wrote via Instagram<\/a> early Tuesday, February 24, alongside throwback photos with her former on-screen dad. \u201cThere was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents. I\u2019ll be forever grateful for that. I\u2019m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him , his family, and everyone who loved him. \ud83d\udc94\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, February 23, Carradine\u2019s family confirmed his death at age 71 following a battle with bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away,\u201d the Carradine family said in a statement to Deadline<\/a>. \u201cIn a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon on light to everyone around him. We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby\u2019s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with Bipolar Disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHilary Duff\u2019s breakout role on\u00a0Lizzie McGuire\u00a0yielded years of success for the actress that continues today, while her costars chose slightly different paths. The sitcom \u2014 starring Duff (Lizzie McGuire), Lalaine (Miranda Sanchez), Adam Lamberg (Gordo), Jake Thomas (Matt McGuire), Hallie Todd (Jo McGuire) and Robert Carradine (Sam McGuire) \u2014 aired from 2001 to 2004 and [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The statement continued, \u201cWe hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness. At this time we ask for the privacy to grieve this unfathomable loss. With gratitude for your understanding and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor\u2019s brother, fellow screen star Keith Carradine<\/strong>, opened up about Carradine\u2019s struggles with bipolar disorder in his own statement to Deadline.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want people to know it, and there is no shame in it,\u201d Keith Carradine said. \u201cIt is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul. He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day. We will take solace in how funny he could be, how wise and utterly accepting and tolerant he was. That\u2019s who my baby brother was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carradine was best known for playing Sam McGuire, Lizzie\u2019s dad, in Disney Channel\u2019s hit comedy starring Duff from 2001 to 2004. He reprised his role in 2003\u2019s The Lizzie McGuire Movie<\/em>. He was also set to return as Sam in a Disney+ reboot which was ultimately scrapped in 2020.<\/p>\n

Carradine was also known for his role in 1984\u2019s Revenge of the Nerds<\/em>.<\/p>\n

He is survived by his three children, including Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> actress Ever Carradine<\/strong>, and his extended family, which includes brother Keith and niece Martha Plimpton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
