Rob Reiner<\/a> and Michele Reiner after the pair were murdered in December, Conan, 62, opened up about the impact of stepping down from his TBS talk show Conan in June 2021 after 11 years on air \u2013 bringing to a close a late-night career that began in 1993 with Late Night with Conan O\u2019Brien and later included The Tonight Show with Conan O\u2019Brien. <\/p>\nSpeaking to David Remnick in an interview for The New Yorker, Conan discussed his evolving career, his return to hosting the Oscars and the deaths of Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, who were found stabbed to death in their California mansion before their son Nick was charged with the double homicide,<\/p>\n
Conan, who now hosts the podcast Conan O\u2019Brien Needs a Friend and the travel series Conan O\u2019Brien Must Go, <\/p>\n
reflected on his decision to leave nightly television by saying: \u201cI left my late-night show four years ago. I\u2019ve had a wonderful time. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI think I reach more people now, either through the podcast or doing the travel show.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cI have all this freedom to be me in different ways, in different formats. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of really beautiful opportunities, and I\u2019ve been having a blast and getting to have types of interviews I never could have had in that old, \u2018You\u2019re up in the attic\u2019 format.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nConan also said: \u201cI mean, this old format is going away, but they\u2019re being replaced by a multitude of other ways to connect with people and be funny, and be satirical, and be probing, and let your talent run wild \u2013\u00a0that in some ways are more freeing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe broadcaster will host the Oscars on 15 March, and discussing his preparations, he said: \u201cI started writing a while ago. \u201cIdeas are like R.A.F. pilots in 1940. You have to generate a lot of them. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cA lot of them fall by the wayside and then some endure.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nConan added: \u201cI can\u2019t fake enjoyment. I need to find ways to make sure that I\u2019m having a lot of fun. I need to prepare \u2013\u00a0I mean, I\u2019m a big preparation person. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI work with this brilliant team of writers who are just downstairs from where I\u2019m doing this podcast, and they\u2019re cranking away.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nLater in his interview, Conan also addressed the deaths of Rob and Michele, who were found dead at their home on 14 December. <\/p>\n
\nTheir son, Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and entered a not guilty plea to the killings during a court arraignment on Monday (23.02.26.) <\/p>\n
\nConan said he and his wife had grown increasingly close to the couple before their deaths. <\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cI knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot. My wife and I were seeing them a lot, and they were so \u2013 they were just such lovely people.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd to have that experience of saying good night to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they\u2019re gone… I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cI mean, there\u2019s no other word for it. It\u2019s just very \u2014 it\u2019s so awful. It\u2019s just so awful.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there \u2013 and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend.\u201d<\/p>\n
