Olympic skier Eileen Gu<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 the most decorated freeskier of all time \u2014 is giving credit to her late grandma after adding another three medals to her name during the 2026 Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n

After announcing that her grandma passed away during a Sunday, February 22, press conference, Gu took to social media to honor her grandmother.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I promised her I would be brave like her \ud83e\udd0d\ud83d\udd4a\ufe0f,\u201d Gu, 22, posted via Instagram<\/a> on Sunday, along with a carousel of photos of her grandma.<\/p>\n

The caption finished with \u201cI love you grandma\u201d in Chinese.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tChina\u2019s Eileen Gu is sharing an update on her personal life after winning her second straight freeski halfpipe gold medal at the 2026 Olympics. \u201cThe reason I was late is that I just found out that my grandma passed away,\u201d Gu, 22, said during a press conference on Sunday, February 22, while becoming emotional. \u201cShe [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Gu\u2019s post included photos of the two of them together, including one of the two wearing Gu\u2019s Olympic medals from the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.<\/p>\n

The skier said on Sunday that she heard the news about her grandma<\/a> right after earning the gold medal for the women\u2019s halfpipe event.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason I was late is that I just found out that my grandma passed away,\u201d Gu said during a press conference on Sunday. \u201cShe was a really big part of my life growing up and someone I looked up to immensely. She was a fighter.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cI think what\u2019s so interesting is that a lot of people just cruise through life, but she was a steamship. This woman commanded life and she grabbed it by the reins and she made it into what she wanted it to be. She inspired me so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gu grew emotional as she continued honoring her grandma at the press conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was very sick, so I knew that this was a possibility,\u201d Gu said. \u201cI didn\u2019t promise her that I was going to win but I did promise her that I was going to be brave like she has been brave. That\u2019s why I keep referring to this theme of betting on myself and being brave and taking risks. It actually goes back to that promise that I made my grandma.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cSo, I\u2019m really happy that I was able to uphold that and hopefully do her proud. But it\u2019s also a really difficult time for me now. So I really apologize for being late but that\u2019s what was going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gu also won the gold medal at the women\u2019s halfpipe event during the 2022 Olympics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m the most decorated freeskier of all time, male or female,\u201d Gu said on Sunday. \u201cI have the most gold medals ever, male or female. That\u2019s a testament to competitive strength, it\u2019s mental strength. It\u2019s being able to perform under pressure, it has nothing to [do with] if you\u2019re a boy or a girl.\u201d<\/p>\n
