Eric Dane<\/strong><\/a> died on the 20th anniversary of his first appearance on Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dane\u2019s loved ones confirmed his death in a statement<\/a> on Thursday, February 19, following his battle with ALS, noting that the actor \u201cspent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The same day also marked 20 years since he made his debut on ABC\u2019s Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em><\/a>. Dane was introduced in the role of Dr. Mark Sloan in season 2, episode 18 \u2014 titled \u201cYesterday\u201d \u2014 which aired on February 19, 2006.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere\u2019s been several instances when a star\u2019s real-life health issues contributed to their fictional counterpart. Jamie-Lynn Sigler announced in 2016 that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) when she was 20 years old. MS is an autoimmune disease that damages the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. In January 2026, Sigler played [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dane returned one season later in a larger role and remained on the show until 2012<\/a>. His character ultimately died from injuries sustained in a plane crash.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I was let go,\u201d Dane said on an episode of the \u201cArmchair Expert\u201d in 2024 while reflecting on his exit from the series.<\/p>\n

Dane also opened up about battling addiction issues after entering a treatment center in 2011. He insisted that the show\u2019s producers \u201cdidn\u2019t let me go because of that.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough it definitely didn\u2019t help. I was starting to become \u2014 as most of these actors who have spent significant time on a show, you start to become very expensive for the network,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd the network knows that the show is going to do what it\u2019s going to do irrespective of who they keep on it. As long as they have their Grey, they\u2019re fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

He concluded: \u201cI wasn\u2019t the same guy they had hired. So I understood when I was let go. And [executive producer] Shonda [Rhimes] was really great. She protected us fiercely. She protected us publicly. She protected us privately. \u2026 But I was probably fired. It wasn\u2019t ceremoniously like, \u2018You\u2019re fired,\u2019 it was just like, \u2018You\u2019re not coming back.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Dane ultimately got sober and continued to book roles<\/a> in shows such as Euphoria<\/em> and Countdown<\/em>. He announced his battle with ALS in April 2025, shortly before production began on Euphoria\u2019s third and final season.<\/p>\n

Before his death, Dane was candid about his experience with the diagnosis, teaming up with organizations like I AM ALS to raise awareness. He was honored by I AM ALS in a heartfelt statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are heartbroken by the passing of our friend Eric Dane \u2014 a fierce advocate, a generous spirit, and a true champion in the movement to end ALS. Eric used his platform not for attention, but for action,\u201d their message noted. \u201cFrom the moment he joined I AM ALS, he showed up with courage and conviction, asking how he could use his superpowers to help the movement grow. It was an honor to brainstorm with him, to walk alongside him in the halls of Congress on behalf of our community, amplify the urgent need for ACT for ALS and research funding, and drive toward treatments and, ultimately, a cure. He understood that ALS is not just a diagnosis; it is a call to action for families, for answers, and for change.\u201d<\/p>\n
