Pat Sajak has hosted the game show for 41 seasons<\/p>\n
\nThe 76-year-old host has presented the game show for just over four decades, having taken over from Chuck Woolery in 1981.<\/p>\n
\nHe announced on Twitter: \u201cWell, the time has come. I\u2019ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s been a wonderful ride, and I\u2019ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nRetirement had been on the cards for a while.<\/p>\n
\nPat told ‘Entertainment Tonight’ last year: \u201cIn most television shows by this time, you would have said, \u2018That\u2019s probably enough,\u2019 but this show will not die.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt appears I may go before the show.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cYears go by fast. We\u2019re getting near the end. It\u2019s been a long [time]. We\u2019re not gonna do this for another 40 years. The end is near. \u201cIt\u2019s an honour to have been in people\u2019s living rooms for that long. People were out there welcoming us. We\u2019re happy and proud.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nPat also hosted a celebrity spin-off of the popular competition, where famous faces compete to win up to $1 million for their chosen charity.<\/p>\n
\nAnd one A-lister he hoped to get on the show was Hollywood actress Meryl Streep.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “I’m still pulling for Meryl Streep ’cause I wanna see her say, ‘Come on, big money!'”<\/p>\n
\nHe joked: “That’s all I want, but she won’t come on because she found out you can’t win an Oscar for this.”<\/p>\n
\nContestants solve word puzzles to win a large sum of cash and prizes determined by spinning a giant carnival wheel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
