Little Mix<\/a> singer is taking a break from her career to focus on her eight-month-old twins Ocean and Story and to campaign for testing at birth for <\/p>\nSMA1 (Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1), a severe form of the rare, progressive, non-reversible, muscle-weakening genetic condition which both of her daughters have.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston on Heart FM’s Breakfast show, Jesy – who recently split from her daughters’ father, Zion Foster – said: “Look listen I\u2019d never say never say never to music, but for me, my girls are my main focus, I\u2019ll be honest with you, I\u2019ve not got time, I really don\u2019t.<\/p>\n
“They are my whole heart and soul and my main focus, and I want to continue advocating for them and getting this heel prick test changed and getting them strong, that\u2019s my main focus.<\/p>\n
\n“Because that\u2019s going to determine their future. That\u2019s my main focus right now.”<\/p>\n
\nThe 34-year-old star recently admitted she is “struggling” to adapt to her life now because she has to be a “nurse” to her daughters as well as their mother.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking on UK TV show This Morning, she grew emotional as she said: “My house looks like a hospital. My hallway is filled with medical stuff. It\u2019s crazy how you can go from one extreme to the next. <\/p>\n
\n“Story is on a breathing machine at night because she\u2019s not strong enough to breathe by herself, they have feeding tubes down their nose, and I\u2019ve literally had to learn all this in the space of a few days since getting their diagnosis. It\u2019s so much to deal with.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI\u2019m still struggling with it, I\u2019m not going to lie\u2026 I just want to be their mum, I don\u2019t want to be a nurse. It\u2019s hard. I just want to reiterate that if this is caught from birth it\u2019s just life changing. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever get over it or accept it, but all I can do is try and do my best and try and make change.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAlthough the babies have undergone gene therapy, Jesy explained the condition isn’t reversable and the tots will “probably” never walk or regain the strength in their necks, but she is trying to stay positive.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “They\u2019ve had treatment now thank God, that that is a one off infusion. <\/p>\n
\n“And that essentially puts the gene back in their body that they don\u2019t have. It stops any of the muscles that are still working from dying. But any that have gone you can\u2019t regain those back.<\/p>\n
\n“So now it\u2019ll be a case of constant physio\u2026 we\u2019ve been told they will probably never walk, probably never regain their neck strength, they are going to be in wheelchairs\u2026 but listen, there have been so many stories where parents have been told this and their children have gone on to do incredible things, so I believe you\u2019ve just got to manifest this. <\/p>\n
\n“They are still smiling, they are still happy and they have each other and that\u2019s the thing I\u2019m so grateful for. They are going through this together and I think this is beautiful. <\/p>\n
\n“All I can do is try my best to be there for them, give them positive energy, and keep doing physio\u2026 my whole life has completely changed.”<\/p>\n
