A place where the clouds themselves seem to settle among the trees, wrapping the canopy in mist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now imagine that somewhere in that forest, sitting on the floor of the Amazon basin, a tiny frog \u2014 barely an inch long with striking golden irises \u2014 has been living for untold generations, unknown to science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That frog now has a name: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oreobates shunkusacha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the story of how it was found, confirmed and described reads like a modern expedition narrative, full of rugged terrain, failed first attempts and the patient, painstaking work of scientific verification.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where was the new species found?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team of scientists from Peru and France set out in October 2022 to explore a cloud forest in the San Mart\u00edn region of Peru.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geographical.co.uk\/science-environment\/geo-explainer-cloud-forests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cloud forest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a type of tropical or subtropical forest found at high elevations where persistent low-level cloud cover bathes the environment in moisture. These ecosystems are known to harbor extraordinary biodiversity \u2014 but the particular area the researchers targeted had been virtually unexplored.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason was simple: the location was too high, too cold and too remote to easily access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accompanied by local guides, the team made two trips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first attempt ended before they could reach the summit. Difficult terrain forced them to turn back. But persistence is a hallmark of field science, and the second trip proved more fruitful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team pushed through to the high-elevation forests \u2014 and that\u2019s where they found the frog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discovery, though thrilling, was only the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In field biology, finding an unfamiliar animal does not automatically mean you\u2019ve identified a new species. That determination requires rigorous analysis \u2014 comparing physical characteristics, examining genetic material and consulting existing scientific literature to rule out any previously described species.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team\u2019s work eventually paid off and the frog was confirmed as a unique species in 2024, roughly two years after it was first spotted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where did the new frog species get its name?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species was formally named <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oreobates shunkusacha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a tribute to the indigenous people of Peru.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShunku Sacha\u201d means \u201cheart of the forest\u201d in the native language of the Kichwa-Lamista people, an expression that speaks to the deep connection between the land and the communities who have long called it home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers proposed \u201cShunku Sacha big-headed frog\u201d as the species\u2019 common name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The formal scientific description of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O. shunkusacha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was recently published in the German journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salamandra-journal.com\/index.php\/contents\/2025-vol-61\/2204-castillo-urbina,-e-,-m-vences,-m-dezetter,-f-glaw,-c-burgos,-l-aliaga,-g-torres-ccasani,-s-f-hope,-a-mendoza-j-k%C3%B6hler\/file?fbclid=IwY2xjawO5EexleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFudG5obVVOdHFNQ3JYblNHc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHqguMHfNmxcrPhEO6sh-M7Qz6Wt7WHYYmNzLFztKwm_o0L8xW_SHgobLlT2-_aem_RxomJEwZOpXEfP6F8F0PNQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salamandra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a peer-reviewed scientific publication devoted to amphibians and reptiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What does the big-headed frog look like?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the study, the frog was spotted on the Amazon floor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It measures just 2-3 centimeters long \u2014 small enough to sit comfortably on a thumbnail. Its body is dark brown in coloration, a natural camouflage against the leaf litter and soil of the forest floor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what truly distinguishes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O. shunkusacha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are its striking golden irises, a vivid detail that makes the animal memorable despite its diminutive size.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The frogs live roughly 1,350 meters above sea level \u2014 nearly 4,430 feet \u2014 placing them squarely in the high-elevation zone of the cloud forest. That elevation is key to understanding the species\u2019 biology and its vulnerability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause these are isolated hills, they act like islands with unique ecosystems in which such species live,\u201d <strong>Ernesto Castillo<\/strong>, a herpetologist at Ararankha and the Salamandra study\u2019s lead author, said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cloud forest hilltops where <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O. shunkusacha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lives are surrounded by lower-elevation terrain that may be inhospitable to the frog. In ecological terms, this isolation makes the species both unique and extraordinarily vulnerable. After all, there may be no adjacent population to replenish its numbers if its habitat is degraded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species is known only from two locations in the department of San Mart\u00edn: the Sacha Runa Conservation Concession, in the district of Sauce, and the Yaku Kawsanapa Concession, in the district of Chazuta, per Mongabay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That extraordinarily limited range \u2014 a concept biologists call a \u201crestricted distribution\u201d \u2014 is one of the factors that makes the frog\u2019s future so precarious.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The new discovery comes with a dire warning<\/b><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_736694\" style=\"width: 1024px;\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<div class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\" style=\"padding-bottom:66.5%;\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"photo-credit photo-credit-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">ERNESTO BENAVIDES \/ Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text wp-caption-text-credit\"><span class=\"caption\"><\/p>\n<p> Photo by ERNESTO BENAVIDES\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as they announced the discovery, scientists issued a warning: the frog should be classified as endangered due to threats to its habitat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The numbers are sobering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past 40 years, the area comprising and surrounding the habitat of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O. shunkusacha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has lost 60% of its forest cover, according to Mongabay. That\u2019s more than half the forest gone in a single human lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main causes of this loss are small-scale coffee and cacao farming, livestock grazing, and illegal logging. These pressures are common across many tropical forest regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conservation efforts in the region center on protecting what scientists and advocates call a \u201cbiocorridor\u201d \u2014 a connected stretch of habitat that allows species to move, disperse and maintain genetic diversity between otherwise isolated patches of forest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without such corridors, isolated populations face heightened risks of decline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe greatest challenge is ensuring the protection of the biocorridor,\u201d says <strong>Kenneth Mori R\u00edos<\/strong>, president of the Sacha Runa Ecological Association, per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/12\/a-new-frog-species-emerges-from-perus-cloud-forests-and-its-already-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mongabay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a dream we have: to see this entire area free from environmental crimes so that the species being discovered can endure over time.
