While Maia Mitchell<\/strong><\/a> and Thomas Brodie-Sangster<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s chemistry is the reason many fans love<\/a> The Artful Dodger<\/em>, it took some time for the dynamic to develop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know Thomas well [before filming]. Before our first day, I had been shooting something in the United States, so I popped over quickly \u2014 like, the day after I found out I booked it \u2014 had one day of rehearsals and met Thomas,\u201d Mitchell, 32, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> about her early days on the Hulu show. \u201cMine and Thomas\u2019 first scene together was actually when I\u2019m in my room and I\u2019m taking off the dress.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitchell recalled the \u201ctension\u201d between<\/a> their characters \u2014 Belle and Jack \u2014 while filming their first scene. \u201cThomas and Maya [had] zero chemistry,\u201d she joked. \u201cHe\u2019s so beautiful, but I was like, \u2018He\u2019s such a gentleman and I\u2019m so loud. I don\u2019t think he likes me very much. Am I talking too much since he\u2019s only speaking when he has something to say?’\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cThen we did that scene and he became Dodger and it was just palpable. I remember looking at our showrunner James McNamara and being like, \u2018We\u2019re good.\u2019 But you really don\u2019t know until you\u2019re both being these characters. The way that he transforms into Jack with all of that edge \u2026 Thomas is just such a wonderful actor and such a beautiful person. He is so generous and so great with everyone. He\u2019s the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Acting as a sequel to Charles Dickens<\/strong>\u2018 novel Oliver Twist<\/em>, The Artful Dodger<\/em> is set in the 1850s and follows Jack Dawkins (Brodie-Sangster), who is a former Royal Navy surgeon trying to establish himself as a respected young doctor. In addition to his antics outside of work, Jack quickly develops a romance with the governor\u2019s daughter Belle (Mitchell).<\/p>\n

Season 2, which premiered on Tuesday, February 10, checks back in on Jack and Belle\u2019s<\/a> star-crossed romance while also introducing a love triangle with newcomer Inspector Henry Boxer (Luke Bracey<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I love about Boxer and the way that Luke played him is [that] the temptation for a love triangle is to make the new edition an antagonist. I love that, in this season, we have stayed away from tropes and we\u2019re getting a really nuanced perspective of these characters,\u201d Mitchell gushed. \u201cThere is this really rich character development and character-driven story. Especially with the love triangle between Boxer and Belle and Jack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitchell previewed Belle\u2019s different connections with both men.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cBoxer is sort of the antithesis of Jack. Where Jack is fireworks, passion and a tumultuous star-crossed love, Boxer is calm and sensible. They\u2019re intellectually equals, which is quite stimulating. He also has this really devastating backstory,\u201d she noted. \u201cHe plays it with such beautiful fragility that you can\u2019t help but root for him and think that it would be a much simpler \u2014 maybe more comfortable life \u2014 for Belle. And Jack is really threatened by that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cIt was fun to walk that line with the love triangle and try to really lean away from anything tropey. We just really get to the crux of who these characters are and for Belle, it is quite empowering because she\u2019s really quite autonomous this season. She\u2019s really looking at her options and prioritizing herself. I love to see a woman doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n
