That is only one of <em>many<\/em> reasons, some would argue, to not commit a homicide)<\/p>\n<p>The video canvassing paid off.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators were able to identify four possible suspects. Unfortunately, the good news stops there.<\/p>\n<p>The alleged assailants are all children \u2014 not even teenagers. Three are 12. The fourth was arrested after investigators obtained and executed a warrant.<\/p>\n<p>This is when the story goes from awful to, somehow, even worse.<\/p>\n<p>On January 23, Alonzo died in the hospital from his injuries.<\/p>\n<p>The medical examiner performed an autopsy, determining that his cause of death was blunt force trauma.<\/p>\n<p>The four tween suspects, who were already facing charges, are now facing upgraded charges.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Juveniles charged with murder in deadly Providence assault\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/geeaDXFG2JI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Prosecutors are bringing a case of murder and conspiracy to commit felony assault against all four as a result of the fatal beating.<\/p>\n<p>The Providence Police Department says that two of the children were arraigned in family court on January 27.<\/p>\n<p>The other two were awaiting arraignment at that time.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/turnto10.com\/news\/local\/two-12-year-olds-facing-murder-charges-for-manton-avenue-attack-providence-rhode-island-january-27-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WJAR<\/a>, authorities have of course not released the names of the suspects because of their ages.<\/p>\n<p>Allegedly, the children admitted to their roles in the assault during their interviews with police. Rhode Island is one of them.<\/p>\n<p>For now, our (limited!) understanding of the RI legal system is that this trial will be in family court unless the Rhode Island attorney general or the family court judge decide otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>As for the victim, Alonzo immigrated from Guatemala to the United States 30 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>There is no known motive for the attack against him, despite social media commenters speculating that anti-immigrant rhetoric may have motivated a possible hate crime.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities are still conducting an investigation.
