It means these communities are no longer publicly accessible, even to Reddit users previously subscribed to them. Here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/reddark_247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitch stream<\/a> which is tracking the exact number of subreddits that have gone dark.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Moderators began planning the actions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/5\/23749188\/reddit-subreddit-private-protest-api-changes-apollo-charges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last week<\/a> after the developers of some of Reddit\u2019s most-beloved third-party apps said they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/5\/31\/23743993\/reddit-apollo-client-api-cost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wouldn\u2019t be able to afford<\/a> the platform\u2019s updated API pricing. And some subreddits didn\u2019t wait until Monday: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/tihi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r\/TIHI (Thanks, I Hate It)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r\/polls<\/a> were among those that went dark shortly after CEO Steve Huffman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/10\/23756476\/reddit-protest-api-changes-apollo-third-party-apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poorly-received<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/9\/23755640\/reddit-api-changes-apps-apollo-shut-down-ama-spez-steve-huffman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friday AMA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Apollo app developer Christian Selig, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/5\/31\/23743993\/reddit-apollo-client-api-cost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post about Reddit\u2019s API pricing<\/a> generated much of the initial outrage, said it was \u201cincredibly amazing\u201d seeing Reddit\u2019s community come together to push back against the proposed changes. \u201cI really hope Reddit listens,\u201d he wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/apolloapp\/comments\/147a8xb\/as_the_subreddit_blackout_begins_i_wanted_to_say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post on the Apollo subreddit<\/a>. \u201cI think showing humanity through apologizing for and recognizing that this process was handled poorly, and concrete promises to give developers more time, would go a long way to making people feel heard and instilling community confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">While many subreddits are going private, others (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/NintendoSwitch\/comments\/14739tg\/rnintendoswitch_to_go_read_only_on_june_12_at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r\/NintendoSwitch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Frugal\/comments\/147eeqn\/rfrugal_is_blacked_out_in_protest_to_reddits_api\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r\/Frugal<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/StarWars\/comments\/143r788\/rstarwars_is_going_restricted_june_12th_13th_due\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r\/StarWars<\/a>) are instead choosing to restrict new posts. Historical posts are still visible, but moderators won\u2019t be allowing new content on these communities while the protest is taking place.
