Mariah Carey<\/strong><\/a> kicked off the 2026 Winter Olympics<\/a> with a performance partially in Italian at the Opening Ceremony.<\/p>\n

Carey, 56, performed \u201cNel Blu Dipinto di Blu,\u201d better known as \u201cVolare,\u201d in Italian before transitioning to English for a rendition of \u201cNothing Is Impossible\u201d from her 2025 album, Here For It All<\/em>,\u00a0during the Friday, February 6, event at Milano San Siro Olympic Stadium in Milan.<\/p>\n

The Grammy-winning singer is among a roster of A-list artists who are expected to perform at the ceremony, with Andrea Bocelli<\/strong>, Chris Stapleton<\/strong> and Karol G<\/strong> also scheduled for the event. The ceremony served as the official start of the Winter Olympics in Italy, which will conclude with the closing ceremony on February 22.<\/p>\n

The Olympics announced Carey\u2019s involvement in the Milano Cortina Games in December 2025.<\/p>\n

The Olympics announced Carey\u2019s involvement in the Milano Cortina Games in December 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cMariah Carey fully represents the emotional atmosphere that accompanies the run-up to the Games,\u201d the local Olympic committee said in a statement at the time. \u201cMusic is a universal language that attracts different stories and sensibilities and intertwines with the opening ceremony\u2019s theme of harmony.\u201d<\/p>\n

In January, creative director Marco Balich<\/strong> teased that Carey would sing in Italian at the opening ceremony in an effort to unite the audience.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen Team USA\u2019s finest athletes competed in the 2022 Winter Olympics, their loved ones were some of their biggest fans. Shaun White, who competed in his final Winter Olympics in February 2022, began dating actress Nina Dobrev in 2020. The two were together until they called off their engagement in September 2025. In January 2022, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While Friday marked Carey\u2019s first official Olympics performance, she has past ties to the Winter Games. Her song \u201c100%\u201d was included on the Team USA soundtrack for the 2010 Olympics, with proceeds from the album donated to Team USA.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am honored to be a part of this effort to support Team USA through this soundtrack,\u201d Carey said in a press release at the time. \u201cThe Olympic Winter Games create once-in-a-lifetime moments for the entire world to see. It is truly amazing to watch these first-rate athletes compete and give everything they have to reach new levels of achievement. Their actions provide hope and inspiration for everyone. As artists, we strive to encourage others through our music.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lyrics of \u201c100%\u201d \u2014 which was originally written for the soundtrack of Carey\u2019s 2009 film, Precious<\/em> \u2014 were fitting for the Olympics.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo a life that\u2019s defined by limits \/ I don\u2019t need no permission to live it \/ I\u2019mma break through the door \u2019til I get in \/ Everything that I got, I\u2019mma give it \/ 100 percent \/ And I ain\u2019t stopping \u2019til I reach the finish,\u201d she sang on the track.<\/p>\n

Prior to Friday\u2019s event, the most recent opening ceremony for the 2024 Summer Olympics<\/a> in Paris drew backlash for a segment that featured drag queens and dancers in a scene that resembled Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cThe Last Supper\u201d painting of Jesus and his apostles. The Olympics clarified via X at the time that the imagery was meant to represent the Greek God Dionysus rather than the Bible story.<\/p>\n

Thomas Jolly<\/strong>, the ceremony\u2019s artistic director, insisted in a July 2024 press conference that he did not intend \u201cto be subversive,\u201d \u201cmock\u201d or \u201cshock.\u201d<\/p>\n
