The Hunger Games<\/em><\/a> star Sam Claflin<\/strong><\/a> is opening about his struggles with body dysmorphia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m incredibly insecure,\u201d Claflin, 39, who played Finnick Odair in the hit franchise, said during a Monday, February 2, appearance on Fearne Cotton<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cHappy Place\u201d<\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI just went to a screening of a film I was in, and everyone immediately afterwards, the director, producers, [said] \u2018How was it?\u2019 I was like, \u2018I hated it.\u2019 It\u2019s my face I don\u2019t like. I don\u2019t like me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Daisy Jones & The Six<\/em><\/a> actor admitted, \u201cI have a form of body dysmorphia, I think,\u201d which he said is rooted in his upbringing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that may have stemmed from being a teenager and hitting puberty late, and not feeling like I was good-looking, or too short, or not strong enough,\u201d Claflin explained. \u201cI remember a P.E. class specifically where I couldn\u2019t do a pull-up when everyone else in my year was doing pull-ups, and I just felt incredibly embarrassed.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Mayo Clinic<\/a>, \u201cbody dysmorphic disorder is a mental health condition in which you can\u2019t stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance \u2014 a flaw that appears minor or can\u2019t be seen by others.\u201d Those with the condition may \u201cintensely focus on [their] appearance and body image, repeatedly checking the mirror, grooming or seeking reassurance, sometimes for many hours each day.\u201d The disorder can \u201ccause you significant distress and impact your ability to function in your daily life,\u201d per the academic medical center.<\/p>\n

Claflin said his body insecurities are further impacted by his career as an actor.<\/p>\n

Sam Claflin was going through major life changes \u2014 going through a divorce and becoming a single father \u2014 when he was cast as rock star Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones & the Six. \u201cI\u2019d been through quite a lot personally at the time,\u201d the Hunger Games actor, 36, told Variety in [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cBeing in the industry that I\u2019m in, and being especially now the entire world has the opportunity to have their opinion, I think, yeah, it really affects you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of the roles I played earlier on in my career \u2026 I had a topless scene in one of my first movies, but wasn\u2019t told, it wasn\u2019t in the script,\u201d he shared. \u201cI got told like a week before they were going to take my top off, and I\u2019m like, \u2018S**t, I haven\u2019t been working out. What am I going to do? This is like my first introduction to the world.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI think it\u2019s I\u2019ve been massively affected by it, and I\u2019d say most guys are that I\u2019ve spoken to, anyway, in some degree. But mine got quite bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The British actor said that, among other things, \u201cI really overthink everything, so I will skip meals \u2026 I don\u2019t eat breakfast, I have a juice in the morning, and I work out doubly hard if I\u2019ve had a bad meal the night before.\u201d<\/p>\n
