Paris Hilton<\/strong><\/a> is speaking out about the \u2018cruel\u2019 and \u2018mean-spirited\u2019 criticism she and Britney Spears<\/strong><\/a> faced in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n

Appearing on the Thursday, January 29, episode of I\u2019ve Never Said This Before with Tommy DiDario,<\/em><\/a> Hilton said she and Spears, both 44, connected over shared past experiences.<\/p>\n

The Simple Life<\/em> alum described being constantly criticized<\/a> after finding fame at a young age as a \u201cvery isolating\u201d experience that not many people can relate to. Hilton noted that the singer is one of the few people who can relate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just with Britney a few weeks ago for her birthday in Mexico and we were just talking about how cruel and mean-spirited people were<\/a> back then,\u201d Hilton said. \u201cAnd she is someone that can relate to that. Very few people can. It has made us both so strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the episode, Hilton explained that she used her dumb blonde public persona that was made famous on The Simple Life<\/em> as a shield against attacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that everyone just saw me as that character because that\u2019s how the world got to know me. And I also played into it even more which I didn\u2019t even realize till later on as like a trauma response from everything that I went through,\u201d Hilton said. \u201cSo I think it was like, also a mask to just protect myself. Just experiencing that level of fame at such a young age is very overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cJust to have the whole world you know watching picking me apart just like, it was very difficult. So, I think having that character, it really, it saved me from a lot of pain because when people would be mean or say things like I\u2019d be like, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s not me. It\u2019s just the character.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Hilton said that while the world has changed somewhat in the two decades since she was first thrust into the limelight, young famous women are still facing backlash.<\/p>\n

When DiDario brought up Stranger Things<\/em> actress Millie Bobby Brown<\/strong>, 21, as one of the young stars of today who currently cops harsh criticism,<\/a> Hilton defended her.<\/p>\n
