Shifting Gears<\/em><\/a> broke up Tim Allen<\/strong> and Jenna Elfman<\/strong>\u2018s characters \u2014 but is there a chance they could rekindle their romance?<\/p>\n

The ABC series marked the first time Allen has starred on a sitcom where his character isn\u2019t married. (Allen\u2019s characters on hit sitcoms Home Improvement<\/em> and Last Man Standing<\/em> were already in committed relationships when each<\/a> series began.)<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the very beginning, [the creative team has said] that we\u2019ve never seen Tim Allen in a sitcom with a romantic interest. And I said, \u2018Well, I\u2019ve just lost my wife on the show, so I don\u2019t see it.\u2019 So I love where we are,\u201d Allen exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> when the show premiered in January 2025. \u201cI said, \u2018If it happens over time and happens organically with two people that do not get along, then it is OK.\u2019 I just am really cautious about this. I just want it to happen where it\u2019s organic and proper.\u201d<\/p>\n

After mourning the loss of his wife<\/a>, Allen\u2019s character Matt formed a connection with Eve (Elfman). The pair dated throughout the second season before calling it quits due to long distance. \u201cI love doing scenes with Tim. I got very excited and it took me a couple episodes to go, \u2018OK, who are we in this? Who are you? How is he playing within this format? How is his timing?\u2019 It takes a moment to see how we\u2019re dancing together as partners,\u201d Elfman told Us in February 2025.<\/p>\n

Elfman specifically praised Allen\u2019s ability to support her as his scene partner, adding, \u201cHe\u2019s so confident as a comedic actor. He\u2019s just confident and I\u2019m confident and we don\u2019t care if something [doesn\u2019t land]. When you\u2019ve been doing it long enough, you\u2019re not paranoid about a joke not working and you don\u2019t care. There\u2019s no preciousness and there\u2019s enough confidence to support the exploration of the scene of humor.\u201d<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t feel like he\u2019s sitting there evaluating my comedy or my ability to do a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cI just feel like he has faith in my ability and everyone around him. I\u2019m allowed to be myself in the space in front of him. That kind of trust when you\u2019re doing comedy is really great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will say that it is really interesting to watch them,\u201d Nader shared with Us<\/em> in September 2025 about the onscreen dynamic. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting to watch their relationship develop, and so they\u2019re going to go into high gear \u2014 but it\u2019s going to be a little bit of a roller-coaster.\u201d<\/p>\n
