Francis Rossi has opened up about the dynamic between himself and Rick Parfitt<\/p>\n
The 76-year-old frontman felt people resented the close bond he had with his late bandmate – who died of sepsis in 1976 – and claimed his pal’s wives and girlfriends tried to stoke a rivalry between them.<\/p>\n
He told The Times newspaper: \u201cRick was tormented, really. Management didn\u2019t like how close we were, nor did anyone else in the band. Then wives and girlfriends come along, saying, \u2018You\u2019re the talented one. It\u2019s not him, it\u2019s you.\u2019 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt happened to the Beatles. [Yoko Ono] is screeching her f****** head off and McCartney must have been looking at Lennon, going, \u2018Are you all right in the head?\u2019 “<\/p>\n
\nFrancis believes Rick – who married three times, to Marietta Boeker, Patty Beeden, and Lyndsay Whitburn, and was also romantically linked to glamour model Debee Ashby between his first and second marriages – was disappointed by fame and success.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cHe came up to me on the bus one day and said, \u2018I should be able to buy any car I want.\u2019 I said, \u2018Rickie, you do.\u2019 Then he went, \u2018Yeah, but I should have a boat and a plane.\u2019 \u2018You do.\u2019 \u2018Yeah, but then you\u2019ve got to pay tax, haven\u2019t you?\u2019 <\/p>\n
\n“You have to be obsessed, you have to be willing to learn and improve all the time, and Rick wasn\u2019t. I think he was following his mother\u2019s dream, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd the Down Down hitmaker believes Rick wished he was a different sort of music star.<\/p>\n
\nHe explained: \u201cRickie would look at a picture of Keith Richards passed out on heroin and go, \u2018Isn\u2019t he great?\u2019 <\/p>\n
\n“Rick aspired to live someone else\u2019s rock\u2019n\u2019roll dream, perhaps because he learnt his craft in cabaret and people ribbed him for it. <\/p>\n
\n“There was a time when he passed out on the M3 on Rohypnol. A copper woke him up and said, \u2018You\u2019ve just had an accident, sir.\u2019 He was happy there, because it was not reality.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMeanwhile, despite his decades of success, Francis admitted he has never been satisfied with his achievements.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “No. I want more. Not in a materialistic way but why do I keep trying? Where do I think I\u2019m going at 76?<\/p>\n
\n\u201cPeople say to me, \u2018Isn\u2019t it great you\u2019ve got the studio to make music?\u2019 Yeah, and it\u2019s great w****** but I like to have sex with somebody else sometimes.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI want people to like me, to like the music, and it never satisfies. The album goes double platinum and you think, why didn\u2019t it go triple platinum? I\u2019m still chasing the carrot.\u201d<\/p>\n
