The official trailer for Yellowstone<\/em><\/a> spinoff Marshals<\/em> appeared to confirm the death of Kayce Dutton\u2019s wife, Monica, previously played by Kelsey Asbille.<\/strong><\/p>\n

CBS released a first look at the series on Friday, January 23, which shows Kayce (Luke Grimes<\/strong>) in mourning following a personal loss. While Yellowstone<\/em> fans know Kayce\u2019s father, John (Kevin Costner<\/strong>), died in the Paramount Network show\u2019s fifth and final season, a scene in the Marshals<\/em> sneak peek<\/a> has Kayce and son Tate (Brecken Merrill<\/strong>) watching a body be covered up in their home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing I ever wanted was taken from me,\u201d Kayce says. In another scene, Kayce asks his friend Pete (Logan Marshall Green<\/strong>) if he was visiting to do a \u201cwellness check\u201d on him.<\/p>\n

Most of the trailer goes on to show Kayce\u2019s decision to join an elite<\/a> U.S. Marshals unit in Montana despite having \u201cdemons to conquer\u201d in his personal life. Kayce offers another update on his personal life, saying, \u201cYellowstone is gone \u2014 same for most of my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

A moment at the end of the trailer shows Kayce with a woman \u2014 who is presumably meant to be Monica \u2014 in what seems to be either a flashback or a dream sequence. Asbille doesn\u2019t make an onscreen appearance, which comes after Yellowstone<\/em> fans previously assumed her character could be written out in the spinoff series.<\/a><\/p>\n

According to the official synopsis, Marshals<\/em> follows Kayce<\/a> leaving ranching life and \u201ccombining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region\u2019s war on violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable,\u201d Grimes, 42, told People in June 2025 about the vision for the new show. \u201cIf it was just like, \u2018Well, he\u2019s happy\u2019 \u2014 we\u2019re just going to watch him be happy? That\u2019s not very cool. But I\u2019ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yellowstone, which premiered in 2018, introduced viewers to the fictional Dutton family, who own the largest ranch in Montana. After finding success on Paramount, creator Taylor Sheridan grew the Yellowstone [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He continued: \u201cThere\u2019s going to be some familiar faces. There\u2019s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we\u2019ll see how that all feels. To go back into it in a new set of circumstances is going to be kind of a transition.\u201d<\/p>\n
