The wife of former NFL<\/a> journeyman Louis Leonard<\/strong> is giving fans a look at what life is actually like for some former players.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy husband survived the NFL, but now he\u2019s surviving everything it left behind,\u201d Lacey Leonard<\/strong> said via an Instagram Reel<\/a> on Saturday, January 17.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople see the glory, the lights, the crowds, but they don\u2019t see this \u2014 the aftermath, the pain, the stiffness, the tremors, the battle his body fights every single day,\u201d she continued as the video showed her husband making his way through a hospital in a wheelchair.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t romanticize this life,\u201d she added. \u201cThe real work happens after the game is long over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lacey wrote over the Reel, \u201cThe NFL didn\u2019t prepare us for this part.\u201d<\/p>\n

Louis, 41, was a defensive tackle in the NFL from 2007 to 2010, playing for six teams and tallying 33 career tackles. He and Lacey met as freshmen at Fresno State University and share two kids. After divorcing in 2012, the couple remarried in 2018.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is our reality,\u201d she continued. \u201cPhysical therapy at the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, a warrior learning to move again, step-by-step and punch-by-punch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through it all, she said, Louis \u201cdoesn\u2019t complain.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NFL minimum salary for rookies was $795,000 in 2024, representing the smallest payday of any of the league\u2019s nearly 1,700 active players who stay signed all year. \u201cHe shows up, he fights, he keeps going,\u201d Lacey said. \u201cThis is strength, this is courage, this is life after the NFL. It\u2019s not all glitz and glam, and it does come with a price.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former linebacker and current actor Terry Crews<\/strong><\/a> added, \u201cAmen\ud83d\ude4f\ud83c\udffe\u2764\ufe0f\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25.\u201d<\/p>\n

Faris Khan<\/strong>, a former Duke University tennis player who now works as a personal trainer, added in a comment with over 700 likes, \u201cI trained a retired NFL Lineman. He is not even 50 yet and from his own words he said the pain his body has now was not worth the millions he made \ud83d\ude0c.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lacey revealed in October 2025 that Louis is battling Parkinson\u2019s Disease and stage-4 kidney disease. In another Instagram Reel<\/a>, she showed a montage of photos from Louis\u2019 playing days before transitioning to a clip of him trying to walk with crutches.<\/p>\n
