Earlier in January, Nelson revealed the heartbreaking news that her daughters had been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1, a genetic condition that causes muscles to weaken.<\/p>\n
\u201cA few months ago, my mum noticed that the girls were not showing as much movement in their legs as they should be,\u201d Nelson shared in a January 4 Instagram<\/a> video. \u201c[It] wasn\u2019t really a concern to me at the time because from the minute I left the NICU, I was told, \u2018Your babies are premature, so do not compare your babies to other babies. They won\u2019t reach the same milestones. Take them as they are.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cWhen the healthcare visit came, we were told, \u2018They look great, they\u2019re healthy and everything is fine,\u2019\u201d the singer shared. \u201cA few signs then started to show a bit later on that they were struggling to feed properly. It was getting gradually less and less and less.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nelson continued, \u201cLong story short, after the most grueling three [or] four months and endless appointments, the girls have now been diagnosed with a severe muscle disease called SMA type 1.\u201d<\/p>\n
