After her rescue on March 12, 2003, the world was eager to understand exactly what had happened. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Elizabeth is finally sharing her full story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix will premiere <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on January 21, a gripping documentary that revisits her shocking abduction and explores the lasting impact it has had on her life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The series features never-before-seen archival footage and exclusive interviews, detailing the nine months Elizabeth spent in captivity. It examines the lives and motives of her kidnappers, <\/span><b>Brian David Mitchell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Wanda Barzee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while chronicling the investigation that ultimately led to their arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the film Elizabeth, alongside her family, recount the trauma she endured and the lasting feelings of guilt and shame that followed the kidnapping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cAfter I was rescued, I was very embarrassed by what had happened to me,\u201d she told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/elizabeth-smart-opens-up-like-never-before-netflix-doc-exclusive-11884515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEOPLE<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in an exclusive interview. \u201cEven though my head knew it wasn\u2019t my fault, my heart couldn\u2019t feel the same way. I felt I\u2019d be judged. I ended up feeling very alone and isolated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now a mother of three, Elizabeth hopes her story can offer solace and understanding to others. \u201cI want survivors to know they are not alone. There are so many of us,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I want people who\u2019ve never experienced this to understand what it\u2019s really like \u2014 the depth of fear, being forced to do things you never would. I also hope viewers gain compassion for families going through similar experiences. And I hope it shows that even after terrible things happen, there can still be happy endings \u2014 that life can still be wonderful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The documentary features interviews with key figures involved in Elizabeth\u2019s rescue, including her father,<\/span><b> Ed Smart<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, uncles <\/span><b>Dave and Tom Smart<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and detectives, reporters, and even Utah residents who saw Elizabeth out in public while in disguise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some family members, including her mother <\/span><b>Lois Smart<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, declined to participate in the film. \u201cSome members of my family want to leave things in the past,\u201d Elizabeth explained. \u201cAnd personally, that\u2019s okay with me.
