Drew Barrymore<\/strong> <\/a>is opening up about the harsh criticisms that she faced as a child star after finding fame in the iconic 1982 film E.T.<\/em><\/p>\n

During the Wednesday, January 14 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show<\/em>,<\/a> the actress, 50, spoke candidly about being body shamed as a child as she looked back at photos of herself from the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis picture\u2026It just breaks my heart. I was 10 years old and I just was told by everybody, \u2018You don\u2019t look how you did in E.T<\/em>. You\u2019re too heavy. You\u2019re not blonde enough. You\u2019re not old enough. You\u2019re too young. You\u2019re not tall,\u2019\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n

Despite her young age, Barrymore said that people \u201cjust started getting involved in the way [she] looked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDrew Barrymore could do anything she wants for her 50th birthday: an epic, glamorous party, wall-to-wall with A-list friends; an indulgent getaway in an exotic paradise or perhaps a chi-chi private dining event at \u2028an exclusive restaurant, wearing something expensive and fabulous. But no: The superstar actress, talk show host and businesswoman instead plans to [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like, I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m supposed to be for other people,\u201d Barrymore continued. \u201cAnd you don\u2019t know yourself at 10. What I\u2019m so relieved about now is that it\u2019s four decades later, I\u2019m 50\u2026I do know what\u2019s important now, and the look in my eyes is so clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cIt\u2019s nice to know that no matter how low it gets, or how much pressure we feel, or how unproud of ourselves, or how we are not pleasing to someone else, or we\u2019re not fitting into some mold someone created for us\u2026that real, true happiness is just this choice we make.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 50 First Dates<\/em> star was exposed to a lot of confronting adult experiences during childhood, including beginning to use substances like alcohol and cocaine at ages 9 and 12.<\/p>\n

In February 2025, Barrymore opened up exclusively to Us Weekly<\/em><\/a> about her childhood and troubled past.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom had a very colorful cast of characters coming through,\u201d she recalled. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t as safe as it should have been \u2014 but when I was younger, it was more whimsical. Not feeling like I had a childhood has nothing to do with feeling robbed of [one]. It just wasn\u2019t your garden-variety youthful childhood, but I never feel upset about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrymore also shared that she experienced a notable lack of rules and boundaries at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole concept of \u2018no\u2019 made me really rebellious,\u201d she added. \u201cAs if it didn\u2019t apply to me. \u2018No\u2019 made me angry, but it turns out \u2018no\u2019 is essential and has incredible benefits. It can make you feel a lot more safe and cared for, even if you hate it at the time. It means someone or something is holding you.\u201d<\/p>\n
