Tom Blyth<\/strong> is loving the transition from darker roles to becoming a rom-com leading man.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I was just ready to do something fun,\u201d Blyth, 30, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> about starring in People We Meet on Vacation<\/em><\/a>, while attending the film\u2019s premiere on Tuesday, January 6. \u201cI\u2019m ready to do something light.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before playing Alex in the romance based on Emily Henry<\/strong>\u2019s bestselling novel<\/a> of the same name, Blyth starred in The Hunger Games<\/em> prequel film The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes<\/em> as the young version of the villainous Coriolanus Snow. Blyth also played the titular character in the western series Billy the Kid<\/em> and most recently appeared in 2025\u2019s Plainclothes<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had done a lot of serious stuff back to back and I was kind of ready to do something that was going to lift up my soul a little bit,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEmily Henry\u2019s first book-to-film adaptation, People We Meet on Vacation, has officially arrived \u2014 and it does not disappoint. The movie, which premiered on Netflix Friday, January 9, is based on Henry\u2019s 2021 novel and follows free-spirited, spontaneous Poppy (Emily Bader) and tight-laced, reserved Alex (Tom Blyth) after they connect on a trip home to [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Unlike his previous projects, People We Meet on Vacation<\/em>, which premiered on Netflix Friday, January 9, is a light-hearted story of unlikely best friends Alex and Poppy (Emily Bader) who become travel buddies. But as life becomes more hectic, their dynamic changes and and feelings begin to escalate.<\/p>\n

While preparing for his first-ever rom-com role, Blyth decided to channel classic leading men of the genre.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the old \u201880s classics were my inspiration,\u201d he told Us<\/em>. \u201cBilly Crystal<\/strong> in [When] Harry Met Sally<\/em>, you can\u2019t help but notice the kind of homage that we were playing with the car scene [when Alex and Poppy first meet].\u201d<\/p>\n

Blyth was also inspired by Tom Hanks<\/strong>\u2019 performances in You\u2019ve Got Mail<\/em> and Sleepless in Seattle<\/em>. (As for his dream costar? Elizabeth Taylor<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

According to the actor,a good, old-fashioned rom-com is exactly what the world needs \u201cright now.\u201d He added that it was refreshing to have a change of pace in his career and get in the mind of a more lovable character.<\/p>\n

You\u2019d be hard-pressed to find an A-list actor in the \u201980s, \u201990s or early aughts who didn\u2019t dip his toe in the rom-com pool. Films like You\u2019ve Got Mail, Notting Hill and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days dominated the film landscape, garnering box office [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI think we can take ourselves really seriously sometimes. And I certainly have been guilty of that at times,\u201d Blyth told Us<\/em>. \u201cAnd I think it\u2019s really worthwhile to do something fun once in a while and remind yourself that what we do for a living is playful and fun and a luxury and to lean into that, and lean into the love.\u201d<\/p>\n
