Hamnet.<\/em><\/p>\nDespite his success, Mescal admitted the pace has started to take a toll.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m five or six years into this now, and I feel very lucky,\u201d Mescal said in the joint interview alongside The History of Sound costar Josh O\u2019Connor. \u201cBut I\u2019m also learning that I don\u2019t think I can go on doing it as much.\u201d<\/p>\n
The actor explained that he\u2019s starting to rethink how he approaches his career \u2014 not by quitting, but by being more intentional. \u201cI\u2019m gonna have to start [rationing myself]. For sure,\u201d he said, before clarifying, \u201cRationing doesn\u2019t necessarily mean less.\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead, Mescal said it\u2019s about recognizing how demanding certain projects can be. \u201cIt means learning that films like The History of Sound take more out of the well,\u201d he added. \u201cYou can\u2019t keep going back and expect to consistently deliver something you\u2019re proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n
At this stage, Mescal is still figuring out what that balance looks like. \u201cWhat that rationing looks like, I don\u2019t know,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI miss being on stage, so I might have a time when I\u2019m only doing [theater] for a couple of years.\u201d He also noted that he has \u201cdifferent priorities in my personal life that I want to attend to.\u201d<\/p>\n
While Mescal is currently promoting Hamnet \u2014 a role that\u2019s already generating Oscar buzz \u2014 he\u2019s hoping awards season will mark a turning point. \u201cOnce I\u2019ve finished promoting that, I hope nobody gets to see me until 2028 when I\u2019m doing The Beatles,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople will get a break from me, and I\u2019ll get a break from them.\u201d<\/p>\n
O\u2019Connor echoed the sentiment, revealing he\u2019s also planning to step away. \u201cI\u2019m going to take some time off, too,\u201d he said. \u201cThe nightmare is resenting the work. Also, the more we see of an actor, the harder it is for that actor to pull the wool over your eyes and convince you they\u2019re someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mescal acknowledged the fear that comes with slowing down, admitting there\u2019s a \u201cgreat fear\u201d that taking a break could impact his momentum. Still, he\u2019s clear on what matters most. \u201cBut what\u2019s the alternative? I don\u2019t want to resent the thing I love,\u201d he said. \u201cThis sounds bold, but I\u2019d rather not be on the train if that is the choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
