The couple got together in the early 1980s when Chase was fresh out of two previous marriages, first to Suzanne Hewitt from 1973 to 1976 and then to actress Jacqueline Carlin from 1976 to 1980. Chase\u2019s third trip down [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Kevin Smith<\/strong> wasn\u2019t afraid to address the mixed headlines about Chase\u2019s past behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, I was always kind of hoping with my heart, like, they don\u2019t get this guy, and when I met him, I understood perfectly that anything that I had ever read was probably true,\u201d Smith declared.<\/p>\n<p>Other commentators flat out called Chase an \u201casshole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe might have been nasty to the other people, but he and I were like that,\u201d <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> alum <strong>Garrett Morris<\/strong> weighed in.<\/p>\n<p>Scroll below for the biggest revelations from the documentary.<\/p>\n<h2>Inside Chevy Chase\u2019s College Experience<\/h2>\n<p>Chevy Chase, born Cornelius Crane Chase, attended Bard College in the \u201860s. He honed in on his musical talent in school, drumming for a jazz band featuring future Steely Dan members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI first met Chevy in the dining commons at Bard. I noticed there was this buffoon at the table that would do very peculiar things,\u201d Chase\u2019s longtime friend <strong>Peter Aaron<\/strong> said in the doc, adding that the comedian would reach across the table for salt and purposefully knock over someone\u2019s cup of water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChevy often fell down flights of stairs and it wasn\u2019t by accident,\u201d Aaron continued. In college, Chase met <strong>Blythe Danner<\/strong> and they briefly dated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlythe Danner, that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/news\/chevy-chase-and-blythe-danner-romance-rewind-actor-called-her-his-1st-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my first real love<\/a>,\u201d he confessed. \u201cShe\u2019s a great woman, and I\u2019ll always think highly of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chevy\u2019s brother, <strong>Ned Chase<\/strong>, also appeared in the film, offering commentary on his brother\u2019s relationship with Danner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlythe and Chevy had different paths post-college,\u201d Ned said. \u201cBlythe is a very skilled actress, and Blythe\u2019s career took off almost immediately. We all did back then,\u201d <em>SNL<\/em> alum <strong>Dan Aykroyd<\/strong> admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Journalist <strong>James Andrew Miller<\/strong> explained, \u201cThe person they worried about the most was Chevy. He was doing a lot of drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a disposable income you\u2019ve never had, and the drug cocaine is not a friend of any person,\u201d <em>SNL<\/em> alum <strong>Rosie Shuster<\/strong> said. \u201c<strong>Gilda<\/strong> [<strong>Radner<\/strong>] called it the devil\u2019s dandruff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHandling a lot of fame really fast while on drugs when you don\u2019t have the strongest emotional foundation, that\u2019s a lot to stay balanced, to stay upright on your surfboard on such choppy surf,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Chevy\u2019s celebrity status continued to rise, and he noted that, \u201cFeeling famous wasn\u2019t a big deal to me. I didn\u2019t care one way or the other really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Director<strong> Marina Zenovich<\/strong> could be heard off camera telling Chevy, \u201cLet\u2019s start again so you say it in a complete sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bitch,\u201d Chevy quipped. \u201cOK, I was on a bus, I looked up and there was a picture of me on the cover of <em>New York Magazine<\/em> and I realized, \u2018That\u2019s it. I\u2019m famous.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Chevy Chase\u2019s Marriage to Jacqueline Carlin Crumbled<\/h2>\n<p>Chevy Chase opened up about his relationship with second wife <strong>Jacqueline Carlin<\/strong> and how it led to his decision to leave <em>SNL<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJacqueline, she was beautiful,\u201d he reflected. \u201cI would show her picture to Lorne [Michaels]. Lorne would say, \u2018You don\u2019t love her.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chevy explained that Carlin would not move to NYC where he was shooting the show. \u201cI was just off. I don\u2019t think I understood what I really wanted,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Chevy chose to leave the show in 1976 in the middle of season 2. He married Carlin that same year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was shocking. We just started, we were just at the Emmys where all the grownups were finding out who were are and what we\u2019re doing. Why now?\u201d Michaels said of Chevy\u2019s exit. \u201cI said we\u2019re just beginning here and you\u2019re at the center of it, the forces pulling him was money powered and all that, and when Hollywood wants you, they\u2019re pretty good at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never had any plans ever,\u201d Chevy reflected on life after <em>SNL<\/em>. \u201cI had agents who had plans, so at the time I was hot so it wasn\u2019t too tough for the agents to see that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chevy said he \u201cfelt it was a mistake to leave <em>SNL<\/em>\u201d in hindsight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really was the kind of show that I was a part of making with Lorne, and it\u2019s the kind of thing that I wanted to do,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2>Goldie Hawn Reflected on Chevy Chase\u2019s Nurturing Side<\/h2>\n<p>Goldie Hawn shared an anecdote about Chevy Chase after costarring in <em>Foul Play<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a single parent. I had two children, [Kate] and Oliver. We went out together. We were both presenting something at an event, and then we came back together, and Oliver, he had fallen asleep in front of the television set, and he went over to him, and he picked him up and he carried him to bed, and he came down the stairs, and he looked at me and said, \u2018Go up, he\u2019s waiting for you,\u2019 and I went upstairs, and I sat with Oliver for a while, and then I came downstairs, and he was playing the piano softly, and he looked up at me and said, \u2018I can\u2019t believe you\u2019re doing all this alone,\u2019\u201d Hawn recalled. \u201cHe cared, and that\u2019s the other part of the wild man \u2026 The guy who had faux pas. The really funny, wacky, crazy guy also has a deep heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How Chevy Chase Fell in Love With Wife Jayni<\/h2>\n<p>After divorcing Jacqueline Carlin, Chevy Chase found love again with wife <strong>Jayni Chase<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met Chevy when I was 23, so I was two years out of college. It was my second job working on a Chevy Chase movie. The last thing I wanted was to fall in love,\u201d Jayni said.<\/p>\n<p>Chevy called Jayni during the documentary interview, playfully telling her, \u201cDon\u2019t forget to mention how much we make love every day,\u201d to which she responded, \u201cOk, I\u2019m on camera, so they might have captured that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Chevy recalled, \u201cI was working on a movie called <em>Under the Rainbow<\/em>. Jayni was the production coordinator in it. My trailer was pulled right up near to where the production unit was, and I could hear her voice, and I\u2019d think, \u2018What a beautiful voice,\u2019 but I never looked to see who it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One day he decided to peek through the door. \u201cI saw her, and she was gorgeous,\u201d he said, before revealing he asked her to go to a movie premiere with him.<\/p>\n<p>In 1982, the pair walked down the aisle in a small backyard wedding of 40 people, including the caterers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s the great love of my life,\u201d Chevy shared. The couple later welcomed daughters Caley, Emily and Cydney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way he took care of me when I was pregnant and then at all the birthings of the girls and seeing him as a daddy and how happy it made him,\u201d Jayni gushed.<\/p>\n<p>Cydney, who also participated in the documentary, said, \u201cThey got through their ups and downs. I mean, it\u2019s not perfect, but they really hold on to one another and they really love each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s beautiful and smart as a whip, and I have nothing much to say about her that isn\u2019t good,\u201d Chevy added of Jayni. \u201cI don\u2019t think a lot of people have the happiness I have. Marriages are breaking up. Kids do bad things. All that stuff is family stuff that\u2019s tough.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Chevy Chase Was Treated for Cocaine Addiction<\/h2>\n<p>Producer <strong>Alan Greisman<\/strong> said once while in Hawaii, Chevy \u201chad somebody ship him coke in a special shaving cream can, which he could twist in a certain way and get to the coke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery so often, we\u2019d have some cocaine flown in from the mainland. Mail\u2019s here!\u201d Chevy confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Chevy\u2019s brother, Ned, remembered a time he visited his brother in Los Angeles and witnessed drug use at a gathering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the center of the table there was a lazy Susan,\u201d he remembered. \u201cThere was a pyramid. That pyramid was cocaine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While working on the 1981 film <em>Modern Problems<\/em>, Greisman and producer <strong>Michael Shamberg<\/strong> said Chevy had an issue with the script one night before filming began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe start to go over the script, page by page, and Chevy pours coke on the table and starts sniffing it, as though you\u2019re supposed to be having a rational discussion about the movie \u2026 and he\u2019s just snorting coke like there\u2019s no tomorrow,\u201d Greisman said.<\/p>\n<p>Shamberg said that Chevy did not share the cocaine with anyone else. \u201cWho does cocaine alone, in front of other people?\u201d he wondered.<\/p>\n<p>Chevy was later treated at the Betty Ford Clinic for his cocaine addiction after doctors brought it to Jayni\u2019s attention. He left the facility after a week.<\/p>\n<h2>The Terry Sweeney Incident<\/h2>\n<p>Director Marina Zenovich called attention to the <strong>Terry Sweeney<\/strong> incident that Chevy Chase was involved in on <em>SNL <\/em>when he returned to guest host in 1985, where Chevy suggested an offensive skit about Sweeney\u2019s sexuality. (Sweeney made history as the first openly gay cast member on <em>SNL<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said something to Sweeney like, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re the gay guy. Why don\u2019t we ask if you have AIDS? And every week, we weigh you,\u2019\u201d Zenovich said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Chevy was just being Chevy,\u201d Lorne Michaels said of the incident. \u201cWe would say terrible things because that\u2019s what would make us laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerry Sweeney. He was very funny. This guy, I don\u2019t think he\u2019s alive anymore Terry Sweeney. I hope he isn\u2019t because I don\u2019t want you talking to him about this,\u201d Chevy said before Zenovich informed him Sweeney is still alive.<\/p>\n<p>Zenovich then read an excerpt from a book detailing the alleged incident, but Chevy remembered some things differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of that\u2019s true,\u201d Chevy claimed. \u201cI would remember that. Yeah, that I was angry, that I had to apologize to him. Good God, Chevy, what\u2019s wrong with you? That\u2019s just not true. My memory is, he\u2019s lying. He\u2019s not telling the truth. That isn\u2019t me, that isn\u2019t how I am. And if I am that way, my life has changed because I have to live with that now for the rest of my f***ing life because you guys got a book out and read it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney declined to participate in the documentary.<\/p>\n<h2>Chevy Chase Detailed Alleged Abuse as a Child<\/h2>\n<p>Chevy Chase claimed his stepfather, <strong>John Cederquis<\/strong>t, would \u201clash out\u201d at him when he was a child and perceived the actor as \u201cinsolent.\u201d Chevy recalled an alleged incident where Cederquist \u201cstarted slapping me across the back of the head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also alleged his mother, <strong>Cathalene Parker Browning<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/chevy-chase-details-physically-abusive-childhood-in-new-documentary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">physically abused him<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first time we stayed together, the first time I went to wake him up, he shuddered,\u201d Jayni said. \u201cAnd he explained, \u2018Well, my mother would wake me up slapping me.\u2019 From the time he was a little guy, wham.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mother was a bag of cats. Certainly on the schizoid spectrum,\u201d Chevy\u2019s half-brother, also named John Cedarquist, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt like this was an out-of-control woman, who I look back on, and I say, \u2018I feel sorry for her.\u2019 She had her own issues. Bad ones, but she was physically abusive to me,\u201d Chevy claimed.<\/p>\n<h2>The \u2018Community\u2019 Drama Was Addressed<\/h2>\n<p><em>Community<\/em> director <strong>Jay Chandrasekhar<\/strong> explained what led to Chevy Chase leaving <em>Community<\/em> for good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[<strong>Dan<\/strong>] <strong>Harmon<\/strong> writes this, a blackface hand-puppet routine,\u201d Chandrasekhar explained of a season 4 episode, in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/why-did-chevy-chase-leave-community-actors-controversy-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chevy used a racial slur<\/a> in between filming scenes. \u201cThe character is a little tone deaf on this thing. Now had it been Chevy in his heyday, he would\u2019ve been totally fine. He said something to <strong>Yvette<\/strong> [<strong>Nicole Brown<\/strong>]. I know that there was a history between those two around race, and she got up and stormed out of there. Chevy storms off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe producer said Yvette would not come back on set unless Chevy apologized,\u201d he continued. \u201cHe comes back on the set, and he goes, \u2018Hey man, I didn\u2019t say anything.\u2019 And I\u2019m like: \u2018No, I know. I know.\u2019 He goes, \u2018You know me and <strong>Richard Pryor<\/strong>, I used to call Richard Pryor the n-word. He used to call me The Honkey, and we loved each other.\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018I know, man. I love that bit.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, you know, can we have a little apology?
