Ryan Michelle Bathe and Sterling K. Brown like to be transparent about their relationship<\/p>\n
\nThe Paradise actor wed Ryan Michelle Bathe \u2013 the mother of his sons Andrew, 14, and 10-year-old Amare \u2013 in 2006 and he thinks it is important to be \u201ctransparent\u201d about the challenges in their relationship to show things aren\u2019t always as \u201cpolished\u201d as they seem.<\/p>\n
\nDiscussing their pact to be truthful on their podcast We Don\u2019t Always Agree, Sterling told Red magazine: \u201cAnytime she gets to disagree with me in public, she gets very excited.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI think that transparency has had real resonance because marriage is its own challenge, right?<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd I think often when people see Ryan and they\u2019ve seen us on the red carpet, or they\u2019ve seen us in interviews, it seems as if we have it all figured out, that it\u2019s all shiny and polished.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s not, it takes work and it takes constant rededication to one another in order to make it work.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd I think that\u2019s the thing we wanted to put out into the world that we thought was of greatest value.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nSterling has another podcast, That Was Us, in which he and co-stars Mandy Moore and Chris Sullivan look back at their award-winning show This Is Us, and he loves being able to watch the programme \u201cpurely\u201d as a fan.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cWe have a blast. We get a chance to watch the show right now purely as fans.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd it really is a beautiful show and I don\u2019t say that because I was a part of it or whatnot.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cLike, we watch it, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Man, Randall was really going through it!\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n
\nThey recently watched an episode where Sterling\u2019s character Randall split from his wife Beth and the actor found it stressful.<\/p>\n
\nHe laughed:\u201d I was like, \u2018Yo man, this s*** is crazy. Like, you gotta figure this out.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt really was causing me major agita.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe 49-year-old actor thinks a key part of the show\u2019s appeal was the way it brought people together.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cThe thing I really enjoyed about the show was that it was something everybody could seemingly agree on.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s about family. It\u2019s about love. It\u2019s about connection, and God knows we can use more art in the world that keeps us connected rather than allows us to continue seeing each other as separate and distinct and adversarial ops, as the kids call it these days.\u201d<\/p>\n
