Season 5 of Stranger Things<\/em><\/a> hinted at a tragic backstory for Vecna involving a traumatic experience<\/a> in a cave \u2014 but what has already been revealed in the show\u2019s offscreen play?<\/p>\n

The final season brought back Max (Sadie Sink<\/strong>) while showing her stuck in a locked part of the Upside Down. She tried to escape<\/a> but Vecna a.k.a Henry (Jamie Campbell Bower<\/strong>) chased her down \u2014 until she reached a cave.<\/p>\n

The location was part of a memory manifested by Vecna and recreated in the Upside Down. Max mentioned it was the only place the villain wouldn\u2019t enter because of a mysterious fear. In part 2, Max and Holly saw a flashback of Henry stumbling upon a man in a cave who shot him when the young boy tried to help. The man had a suitcase, which Henry opened but its contents were unclear.<\/p>\n

Creators Ross<\/strong> and Matt Duffer<\/strong> confirmed that the scene<\/a> was a reference to Stranger Things<\/em>\u2018 prequel play, The First Shadow<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Stranger Things universe is getting bigger and bigger \u2014 and Us Weekly is overflowing with suggestions for potential spinoff ideas. Viewers have been compelled by the mysterious town of Hawkins, Indiana, since Stranger Things debuted in 2016. As the Netflix series continued to find success, the Upside Down and the supernatural entities that came [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen we were working on the play with Kate Trefry, we had Henry\u2019s backstory worked out. There was always a balance that we had to find in terms of how much we were going to put in the play,\u201d Matt, 41, told Cosmopolitan<\/em>. \u201c[The director] Stephen [Daldry] and [the producer] Sonia [Friedman] were always pushing for more and we were pushing back and saying, \u2018Well, we have to wait to reveal that in the show.\u2019 You\u2019ll see, especially as you reach the final episode, there\u2019s more overlap with the play.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt confirmed that fans \u201cabsolutely do not have to have seen the play to understand.\u201d The Easter eggs will presumably get addressed<\/a> in the next two installments of the show but luckily Us<\/em> has a breakdown of what the play revealed.<\/p>\n

Stranger Things: First Shadow<\/em> showed Henry as a child living near caves in Nevada. There was a military base nearby that was conducting an experiment where they tried to turn objects invisible. Henry ventured into the cave and stumbled across technology that resulted in him accidentally getting transported to another universe called Dimension X.<\/p>\n

The incident shaped Henry, who became possessed by an entity<\/a> that manipulated him into becoming the big bad. Vecna was introduced in season 4, which initially showed Bower, 37, in a more friendly role as One before Henry became the show\u2019s biggest villain.<\/p>\n

\u201cI first got two sets of [script] sides, one from Primal Fear, and one from Hellraiser,\u201d the actor told Variety in May 2022. \u201cI had no idea what this character was. I wasn\u2019t sent any material from the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watching the series put the mysterious character into perspective for Bower.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tStranger Things puts a lot of work into making viewers feel like they have been transported to a fictional town in Indiana during the \u201980s \u2014 which includes transforming their actors into completely different people. The Netflix series, which debuted in 2016, centers around supernatural events that take place in Hawkins after a door is [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI went crazy for, like, two days. In my apartment, I put a picture of Will Byers [Noah Schnapp] in the middle, and then all the other characters around it, and then sort of made this Claire Danes-esque from Homeland mind-map of who I thought this person was,\u201d he continued. \u201cI stepped back from it after two days, and was like, \u2018That feels kind of good.\u2019 So I took a picture, and then I printed out all the pictures and put them in this little folder \u2014 and then I got a phone call saying Matt and Ross [Duffer] wanted to meet.\u201d<\/p>\n

From there, Bower showed the creators the vision he had for the role. \u201cThey were like, \u2018This is literally perfect. Everything that you\u2019ve gotten here is perfect. Your references are perfect. The inspiration is perfect. Do you mind if we show you some more visual references that we have and what we\u2019re thinking, and tell you a little bit more about the character?\u2019\u201d he recalled. \u201cI think, by that point, they knew I wasn\u2019t completely insane.\u201d<\/p>\n
