Chevy Chase<\/a> and You\u2019re Not, his daughter Caley Chase explained: \u201cHe has basically come back from the dead. He had heart failure.\u201d<\/p>\nHis wife Jayni Chase added: \u201cSomething was wrong, and he couldn\u2019t explain to me what was wrong. So, we go to the ER. His heart stops. During those years he was drinking, he got cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they can\u2019t pump as much blood out with each beat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chevy\u2019s friend, Peter Aaron revealed Chevy\u2019s loved ones were told to \u201cprepare for the worst\u201d as he battled heart failure, which can be caused by cardiomyopathy.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cThey decided to put him into a coma for maybe eight days. That\u2019s pretty rough on the body.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nCaley said: \u201cThe doctor had warned us: \u2018We might not get him back. We don\u2019t know how present he\u2019ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst.\u2019 He woke up, all he could do was use his voice.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBut Caley knew her comedian dad was on the mend when he started cracking jokes with a nurse who came in to rearrange some medical equipment: <\/p>\n
\nCaley explained: \u201cShe said, \u2018I\u2019m going to have to put this in here.\u2019 And he said, \u2018That\u2019s what she said.’\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHowever, it wasn\u2019t an easy recovery and Peter revealed Chevy had some \u201ccognitive disability\u201d and it took a while for him to \u201creorient himself\u201d after the coma. <\/p>\n
\nHe went on: \u201cI feel like his memory gaps come from that incident.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nChevy agreed, saying: \u201cAccording to the doctors, my memory would be shot from it. That\u2019s what\u2019s happened here.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cHeart failure is what it is. I\u2019m fine now. It\u2019s just that it affects your memory, the doctors have told me that. So, I have to be reminded of things.\u201d<\/p>\n
