Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong><\/a> is famous. Gwyneth Paltrow<\/strong><\/a> is too; so are Fran Drescher<\/a>,<\/strong> Odessa A\u2019zion<\/a>,<\/strong> and Tyler, the Creator<\/a>.<\/strong> They\u2019re all spectacular in Marty Supreme,<\/em> Josh Safdie<\/strong>\u2019s high-octane table tennis picture that has a place on most critics\u2019 lists of the best movies this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a lot that makes Marty<\/em> sing, but a big part of this movie, as in Safdie\u2019s previous work\u2014films like Uncut Gems,<\/em> Good Time,<\/em> and Heaven Knows What<\/em>\u2014is its ensemble of unusual faces and unique voices. In working with one of Hollywood\u2019s finest casting directors, Jennifer Venditti<\/strong><\/a>, Safdie has built a constellation of loud, aggressive New Yorkers\u2014largely played by people who are not film stars. One gets the impression that these people would be carrying on the same way even if Safdie\u2019s camera weren\u2019t rolling.<\/p>\n Here, Safdie explains his rationale for populating this celebration of tenement dwellers and junkyard Jews with authors, fellow film directors, and personalities he discovered in viral videos\u2014starting with a voice likely only known to those who really<\/em> know.<\/p>\n Josh Safdie: Mariann<\/a><\/strong> From Brooklyn<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> she\u2019s the first person who speaks in the movie [as the shoe shopper]. The great Howard Stern<\/em> caller. Not a Jew, but an Italian; we\u2019ll claim her. I called her up, and she couldn\u2019t believe it. I chased her down [and] I said, \u201cYou need to be in the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n When you cast somebody, you\u2019re not just casting their face and their ability to be blind to themselves; you\u2019re casting the voice. Voices are so important, and her voice is one of the most iconic. She\u2019s the biggest Howard Stern<\/strong> fan, and she\u2019s his most prevalent and prominent caller, more so than High Pitch Erik.<\/strong> She calls, and every time she goes, \u201cHOWWWAD! IT\u2019S MARIANN. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH,\u201d and they always play a squawking crow in the background. My camera assistant was not starstruck once on the film, but that day he was.<\/p>\n Larry “Ratso” Sloman.<\/p>\n <\/span>John Nacion\/Variety\/Getty Images<\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n Ratso was given his nickname by Bob Dylan.<\/strong> He was chasing an interview on the Rolling Thunder tour<\/a>, and he couldn\u2019t get the interview. I think three weeks in, he was sleeping in his car. He hadn\u2019t shaved in a while; his hair was greasy. Dylan knocks on the glass, and he goes, \u201cHey, Ratso!\u201d He goes, \u201cOh, you\u2019re saying I look like Dustin Hoffman<\/strong>?\u201d He goes, \u201cNo, no, no. Ratso Rizzo<\/a>, the character.\u201d It stuck from that moment on.<\/p>\n He\u2019s a huge beacon of culture. He has written so many books, sometimes getting credited, sometimes not. Most recently, [he did] the Mike Tyson<\/strong> autobiography. He did Howard Stern\u2019s. He wrote a great book on [Harry] Houdini. He did a great book on the Dylan Rolling Thunder tour. He did Anthony Kiedis<\/strong>\u2019s biography. Ratso actually introduced me to Penn [Jillette];<\/strong> Ratso was friends with Al Goldstein. I had met him [when] I went to a talk for the National Lampoon<\/em> book celebration\u2026at the New York Public Library. It was pretty dry and not very funny until Ratso got up there.
