On multiple occasions, Matt Damon<\/strong><\/a> has lamented<\/a> turning down an offer<\/a> to star in Avatar<\/strong><\/a><\/em> from James Cameron<\/strong><\/a>\u2014an opportunity he has said would have earned him 10% of the gross profits from the original 2009 film, totaling more than $120 million.<\/p>\n However, the acclaimed filmmaker is now denying that such an offer was ever made.<\/p>\n \u201cHe was never offered the part,\u201d James<\/strong> tells The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em> in an interview published on December 18. \u201cI can\u2019t remember if I sent him the script or not. I don\u2019t think I did?\u201d<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The Titanic<\/em> director went on to explain that Matt<\/strong> was interested in working with him and found Avatar<\/em> \u201cintriguing,\u201d but had already committed to a Jason Bourne<\/em> movie and therefore couldn\u2019t pursue the sci-fi epic.<\/p>\n \u201cBut he was never offered. There was never a deal. We never talked about the character. We never got to that level. It was simply an availability issue,\u201d James<\/strong> clarified.<\/p>\n \u201cNow what he\u2019s done is he\u2019s extrapolated \u2018I get 10 percent of the gross on all my films.\u2019 And if, in his mind, that\u2019s what it would\u2019ve taken for him to do Avatar<\/em>, then it wouldn\u2019t have happened. Trust me on that,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n James<\/strong> also joked that Matt<\/strong> is now \u201coff the hook\u201d and doesn\u2019t need to feel bad about it anymore, teasing: \u201cIt\u2019s okay, buddy! You didn\u2019t miss anything.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the confusion, there are no hard feelings. The director said he respects the Good Will Hunting<\/em> actor and would love to work with him someday.<\/p>\n This back-and-forth has happened between Matt<\/strong> and James<\/strong> before. <\/p>\n \u201cAnd I really think you know, \u2018Matt<\/strong> you\u2019re kind of like one of the biggest movie stars in the world, get over it.\u2019 But he had to do another Bourne<\/em> film which was on his runway and there was nothing we could do about that.
