Travis Kelce<\/strong><\/a> has broken his silence over his decision not to speak with the press following the Kansas City Chiefs\u2019 elimination from the 2025-2026 playoffs \u2014 and it wasn\u2019t because they lost.<\/p>\n

Kelce, 36, addressed the drama surrounding him shutting down interviews<\/a> on Sunday, December 14, telling reporters on Friday, December 19, that it was due to Chiefs\u2019 quarterback Patrick Mahomes<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I talked to him afterward. It was before the MRI,\u201d Kelce explained during the Friday press conference<\/a>, confirming that he briefly spoke with Mahomes, 30, following his ACL tear that occurred during Sunday\u2019s loss.<\/p>\n

The tight end added<\/a>, \u201cThat\u2019s why I kinda chose not to speak with the media right after that game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelce added that he has checked in with Mahomes \u2014 who is out for the rest of the season \u2014 since the injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s my brother, I know everything he\u2019s going through and all that. I just [want to] keep it personal,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n

The Chiefs\u2019 loss on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers made headlines for a variety of reasons \u2014 a few of which revolved around Kelce.<\/p>\n

For starters, the team\u2019s record for the 2025-2026 was brought to 6 and 8, which is a losing record<\/a>, something that is rare for the Kansas City franchise.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPatrick Mahomes is weighing in on teammate Travis Kelce\u2019s future with the Kansas City Chiefs. \u201cI\u2019ll let Travis make that decision on his own,\u201d Mahomes, 29, responded when asked his thoughts on whether Kelce, 35, will play another NFL season next year, following the Chiefs\u2019 Super Bowl loss against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, February [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Because of the loss, the Chiefs will play the remaining three games of their regular season schedule but won\u2019t be in the playoffs, the first time since 2014.<\/p>\n

During the game, Mahomes suffered a season-ending injury<\/a> that was later confirmed as an ACL tear. He has since undergone surgery to repair the damage.<\/p>\n

After the game concluded, Kelce was approached by the media for comment but he refused to engage \u2014 which is unlike the legendary athlete.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry guys, it\u2019s not the time,\u201d Kelce told reporters in the locker room on Sunday, according to ESPN. \u201cI\u2019ll catch you guys during the week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelce sidestepping the press didn\u2019t sit well with some people, including ESPN personality Chris Russo<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow about Kelce on Sunday afternoon?\u201d Russo, 66, said during the Wednesday, December 17, episode of ESPN\u2019s First Take<\/em>. \u201cThey just lost a game. Mahomes tears his ACL. The last play of the game [backup quarterback Gardner] Minshew<\/strong> goes to Kelce to try and kick a field goal. Intercepted. And Kelce, after he settles down in the locker room, he says, \u2018Not today, fellas. I\u2019m not going to talk to you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Russo took issue with Kelce leaving the \u201cpoor guys who have been covering the Chiefs over the years\u201d hanging.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day for seven months they cover the football team and you blow them off at the end of this game when they got Mahomes out? Maybe the last game you\u2019re ever gonna play [with him]? You can\u2019t give them three words?\u201d he quipped. \u201cYou can\u2019t give them, \u2018Terrible day for us, I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to do with my career? Hopefully Pat will be OK.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Russo argued that Mahomes going down was \u201ca huge moment in Kansas City and NFL history\u201d as it means next season for the team is also up in the air. (Depending on his recovery, Mahomes may not start the 2026-2027 season<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\u201cYou blow everybody off walking off the field and you don\u2019t talk to the press and you get in the car?\u201d Russo added. \u201cThat is wrong. That is not the way to do things. You give them five minutes. Give them a couple of sentences for the Chiefs fans. Really down on him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Travis, meanwhile, later spoke about the game on his and brother Jason Kelce<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s \u201cNew Heights\u201d podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got three games left \u2026 the integrity of who you are as a professional, as a player, you gotta love this s***, man. And Chiefs Kingdom, we\u2019re gonna give you everything we got. There\u2019s no question about that,\u201d he told listeners on Wednesday, December 17. \u201cThere\u2019s only one way I do things, there\u2019s only one way Coach Reid does things, and if we\u2019re gonna go out there and play some football, we\u2019re gonna do it the right way and keep trying to get these things fixed and end on the highest note we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Travis\u2019 media snub made heads, the Chiefs\u2019 losing season has also brought an onslaught of chatter about his future<\/a> in the NFL back into the spotlight.<\/p>\n
