Pulp<\/a>‘s profile skyrocket with the release of their 1995 album Different Class, and although he had always wanted to be famous, he realised just months later that it wasn’t necessarily a good thing in the wake of the 1996 drunken incident.<\/p>\nHe told The Sunday Times’ Culture magazine: \u201cFor years our impetus for doing things was never success because we never sold any records.<\/p>\n
“Then we did sell records, so the label wanted us to get on with the next one, but becoming well known had such an effect on my life that I needed time to take it in. Should have put my foot down and had a break. I didn\u2019t, and things fell apart.<\/p>\n
\u201cEver since I was a little kid I wanted to be in a band and be famous.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut after the Michael Jackson thing I entered a celebrity world where everyone just knew me, whether I made music or not. I thought, is it even worth being in a band, given that it\u2019s f***ed my life up?”<\/p>\n
\nJarvis eventually moved to Paris with then-wife Camille Bidault-Waddington, and retreated out of the spotlight to raise their son Albert, 22,.<\/p>\n
\nAnd the Common People hitmaker enjoyed being able to walk around the city without attracting attention<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “That was quite a good thing actually.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt was good to be somewhere where nobody recognised me. I remember being on the Metro, seeing posters for a concert of someone I had never heard of playing the Stade de France, and realising, there is no meaning to celebrity, really. It\u2019s just a poster. That\u2019s when I started relaxing about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMeanwhile, Jarvis admitted his relationship with the songs from Different Class “changes” all the time and he thinks there’s a case to “pension off” one of the group’s biggest singles, Disco 2000.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “For years I couldn\u2019t play Mis-Shapes because it was a call to arms for a revolution that never came. Maybe there will be one now. <\/p>\n
\n“Why did I write a song called Help the Aged at 34? <\/p>\n
\n“Disco 2000 was written five years before the year 2000 and now it\u2019s 25 years after. We should probably pension it off, but what can I say? It works in concert. They all do.\u201d<\/p>\n
