Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u2019s downfall as a working royal<\/a> is unquestionably intertwined with his connection to the late disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While Mountbatten-Windsor has always denied any wrongdoing, he was accused by Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre<\/strong><\/a> (n\u00e9e Roberts) of sexually assaulting her three times when she was 17 years old. The two apparently met through Epstein and his companion Ghislaine Maxwell<\/strong>, the latter of whom was convicted of sex trafficking of a minor following Epstein\u2019s death by suicide in 2019. (Maxwell maintains her innocence.)<\/p>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor\u00a0initially stepped back from his royal duties as the Epstein scandal exploded in 2019, but it wasn\u2019t until the allegations resurfaced<\/a> in October 2025 that he formally gave up his royal title.<\/p>\n

\u201c[I will] no longer use my title or the honors which have been conferred upon me,\u201d he told Us Weekly<\/em> in a statement. \u201cAs I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew is the subject of Andrew Lownie\u2019s 2025 book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, which the BBC described as \u201can unrelentingly unflattering portrait\u201d of the royal and \u201cdepicts him as [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s Introduction<\/h2>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor told Newsnight<\/em> journalist Emily Maitlis<\/strong> in a bombshell 2019 interview<\/a> that he was introduced to Epstein in 1999, which differs from notes taken by the prince\u2019s private secretary in 2011, which specified that Mountbatten-Windsor and the financier met in \u201cthe early 1990s.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two men were reportedly introduced by Maxwell, Mountbatten-Windsor\u2019s longtime friend and Epstein\u2019s companion.<\/p>\n

Jeffrey Epstein Visited Prince Andrew at Windsor Castle<\/h2>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor confirmed to Newsnight<\/em> that Epstein visited him at Windsor Castle and Sandringham<\/a> in 2000, though he specified that the financier wasn\u2019t given a formal invitation from the royal family.<\/p>\n

\u201c[It was] certainly at my invitation, not at the Royal Family\u2019s invitation but remember that it was his girlfriend [Maxwell] that was the key element in this,\u201d Mountbatten-Windsor insisted. \u201cHe was, as it were, plus one, to some extent in that aspect.\u201d<\/p>\n

That same year, Mountbatten-Windsor and Epstein were both spotted at Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.<\/p>\n

Epstein\u2019s Conviction<\/h2>\n

In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to charges of child prostitution and soliciting a prostitute. As part of a plea deal, he served only 13 months behind bars.<\/p>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor told Newsnight<\/em> that he\u2019d \u201cceased contact\u201d with Epstein throughout the investigation and trial, but got back in touch in 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one of those things that somebody\u2019s going through that sort of thing, \u2018Well I\u2019m terribly sorry I can\u2019t be [seen with] you,\u2019\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Prince Andrew\u2019s New York Visit<\/h2>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor made a very controversial decision to visit Epstein at his New York City mansion in 2010, following the convicted sex offender\u2019s release from the Palm Beach County Jail. On Newsnight<\/em>, the royal was asked why he\u2019d agreed to stay at Epstein\u2019s home in light of his conviction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve questioned myself as to why did I go and what was I doing and was it the right thing to do?\u201d he said. \u201cNow, I went there with the sole purpose of saying to him that because he had been convicted, it was inappropriate for us to be seen together.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two were seen together days later when the paparazzi photographed them on a walk in Central Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had an opportunity to go for a walk in the park and that was the conversation coincidentally that was photographed which was when I said to him, I said, \u2018Look, because of what has happened, I don\u2019t think it is appropriate that we should remain in contact,\u2019 and by mutual agreement during that walk in the park we decided that we would part company and I left,\u201d Mountbatten-Windsor told Newsnight<\/em>. \u201cI think it was the next day and to this day I never had any contact with him from that day forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew Resigns From Key Role<\/h2>\n

The repercussions over Mountbatten-Windsor and Epstein\u2019s Central Park photograph were swift, as Buckingham Palace announced<\/a> in 2011 that he would resign as a U.K. trade envoy.<\/p>\n

Sexual Assault Allegation Against Andrew<\/h2>\n

As part of a victim\u2019s rights lawsuit against Epstein and Maxwell, Giuffre alleged that she was sexually abused by Mountbatten-Windsor when she was 17 years old in 2001. Following a night out at London\u2019s Tramp nightclub with Epstein, Maxwell and Mountbatten-Windsor, Giuffre alleged that she was paid $15,000 by Maxwell and told to \u201cdo for [Mountbatten-Windsor] what you do for Epstein\u201d at Maxwell\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve no recollection of ever meeting her. I\u2019m, almost, in fact I\u2019m convinced that I was never in Tramps with her,\u201d Mountbatten-Windsor told Newsnight<\/em> in 2019. \u201cThere are a number of things that are wrong with that story, one of which is that I don\u2019t know where the bar is in Tramps. I don\u2019t drink. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever bought a drink in Tramps whenever I was there.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another fiery exchange from his Newsnight<\/em> interview, Maitlis brought up Giuffre\u2019s memory of Mountbatten-Windsor \u201cprofusely sweating\u201d as they danced together at Tramps.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a slight problem with the sweating because I have a peculiar medical condition which is that I don\u2019t sweat or I didn\u2019t sweat at the time and that was \u2026 was it \u2026 yes, I didn\u2019t sweat at the time because I had suffered what I would describe as an overdose of adrenalin in the Falkland\u2019s War when I was shot at and I simply \u2026 it was almost impossible for me to sweat,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

A photograph of Mountbatten-Windsor and Giuffre exists though he denied the \u201cphotograph was taken\u201d by Epstein in order to compel him to contribute to a rehabilitation of the financier\u2019s image.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf that photograph was taken with that purpose in mind, then it doesn\u2019t \u2026 equate to what actually happened,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

Giuffre won a defamation lawsuit against Maxwell in 2017 and settled a separate suit with Epstein in 2009.<\/p>\n

Epstein\u2019s 2nd Arrest<\/h2>\n

The financier was taken into custody on federal charges of sex trafficking minors on July 6, 2019. Federal officials apprehended Epstein at Teterboro airport in New Jersey as he returned from a flight to Paris.<\/p>\n

Episode Found Dead<\/h2>\n

Epstein was found dead of a suspected suicide in his jail cell at New York City\u2019s Metropolitan Correctional Center on August 10, 2019.<\/p>\n

Newsnight Interview<\/h2>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor sat down for a 58-minute TV interview with BBC Newsnight<\/em> journalist Emily Maitlis, where he hesitated when asked if he regretted his friendship with Epstein.<\/p>\n

\u201cStill not and the reason being is that the people that I met and the opportunities that I was given to learn either by him or because of him were actually very useful,\u201d Mountbatten-Windsor answered. \u201cHe himself not, as it were, as close as you might think, we weren\u2019t that close. So therefore, I mean yes, I would go and stay in his house but that was because of his girlfriend, not because of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding to Giuffre\u2019s accusations, Mountbatten-Windsor said he had \u201cno recollection of ever meeting\u201d her and denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Stepping Back<\/h2>\n

In light of his disastrous Newsnight<\/em> appearance, Mountbatten-Windsor announced in November 2019 that he was stepping back from royal duties<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has become clear to me over the last few days that the circumstance relating to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major disruption to my family\u2019s work and the valuable work going on in the many organizations and charities that I am proud to support,\u201d he said. \u201cTherefore, I have asked Her Majesty if I may step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has given her permission.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawsuit and Private Settlement<\/h2>\n

Giuffre accused Mountbatten-Windsor of sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress in a lawsuit filed in 2021. Lawyers for the royal confirmed in February 2022 that he\u2019d settled the lawsuit<\/a> for an undisclosed sum. Mountbatten-Windsor continued to maintain his innocence.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrince Andrew intends to make a substantial donation to Ms. Giuffre\u2019s charity in support of victims\u2019 rights,\u201d a letter from his attorneys read. \u201cPrince Andrew has never intended to malign Ms. Giuffre\u2019s character, and he accepts that she has suffered both as an established victim of abuse and as a result of unfair public attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Giuffre died by suicide<\/a> at age 41 in April 2025.<\/p>\n

New Book on Prince Andrew Exposes Alleged Emails<\/h2>\n

Andrew Lownie<\/strong>\u2019s tell-all 2025 book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York<\/em> set off a firestorm of new allegations about the prince\u2019s connection to Epstein. Multiple U.K. outlets published alleged email correspondence between Mountbatten-Windsor, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson<\/strong> and Epstein.<\/p>\n

One alleged email<\/a> sent in 2011 saw Mountbatten-Windsor writing to Epstein that they were \u201cin this together and will have to rise above it.\u201d Another email<\/a> allegedly sent after Ferguson publicly distanced herself from Epstein in 2011 saw her address the convicted sex offender as \u201ca steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me and my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to the resurfaced messages, Ferguson\u2019s spokesperson told BBC News<\/em>: \u201cThe duchess spoke of her regret about her association with Epstein many years ago, and as they have always been, her first thoughts are with his victims. Like many people, she was taken in by his lies. As soon as she was aware of the extent of the allegations against him, she not only cut off contact but condemned him publicly, to the extent that he then threatened to sue her for defamation for associating him with paedophilia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prince Andrew Officially Resigns From Royal Duties, Gives Up His Title<\/h2>\n

With tension once again mounting over the Epstein scandal, Mountbatten-Windsor announced in October 2025 that he would give up his royal title.<\/p>\n

Giuffre, who was just 41 at the time of her death in Neergabby, Australia, had been at the center of accusations against Prince Andrew and the late Epstein involving sexual abuse and sex [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIn discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,\u201d Mountbatten-Windsor said in a statement to Us<\/em> on October 17, 2025. \u201cI have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buckingham Palace Begins Process to Strip Prince Andrew of His Royal Titles<\/h2>\n

A palace spokesperson announced on October 30, 2025, that King Charles III had initiated the process to strip his brother of his royal titles<\/a>. As a result, his sibling would \u201cnow be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor,\u201d the palace confirmed.<\/p>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor will be required to move out of his residence at Royal Lodge, which he acquired as part of a peppercorn lease agreement<\/a> in 2003.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Mountbatten-Windsor\u2019s] lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence,\u201d Buckingham Palace told Us in a statement. \u201cFormal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prince Andrew Seen in Newly Released Photos from Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s Estate<\/h2>\n

On December 12, 2025, Democrats from the House Oversight Committee released 19 photos<\/a> of more than 95,000 recovered from Epstein\u2019s estate. President Trump, former President Bill Clinton<\/strong>, director Woody Allen<\/strong> and former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates<\/strong> were all featured in the photos<\/a> but all have denied any knowledge of Epstein\u2019s wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

The images were obtained as part of the House Oversight Committee\u2019s agreement with the Epstein estate to review photos and videos \u201ctaken at any property owned, rented, operated, or used by Epstein from January 1, 1990 through August 10, 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor is shown<\/a> alongside Gates in one of the newly released photos. The tech magnate told the Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> in January 2025 that it was \u201cfoolish\u201d to spend time with Epstein.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe sort of got time with various people by spending time with other people,\u201d Gates said. \u201cSo, yes, I think I was quite stupid. I thought it would help me with global health philanthropy. In fact, it failed to do that. It was just a huge mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Us<\/em> reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment.<\/p>\n

Prince Andrew Won\u2019t Face Police Action Over Bodyguard Allegation<\/h2>\n

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police told BBC News<\/em><\/a> on December 13, 2025, that police would take \u201cno further action\u201d<\/a> against Mountbatten-Windsor over accusations that he asked his taxpayer funded police protection officer for information on Giuffre.<\/p>\n

The Mail on Sunday<\/em> reported in October that Mountbatten-Windsor gave Giuffre\u2019s date of birth and social security number to a protection officer. Mountbatten-Windsor has not commented on the allegations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Met remains committed to thoroughly assessing any new information that could assist in this matter,\u201d they said. \u201cTo date, we have not received any additional evidence that would support reopening the investigation. In the absence of any further information, we will be taking no further action.\u201d<\/p>\n
