Stephen Colbert<\/strong> accidentally broke a long-standing wedding rule while chatting with Taylor Swift<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 and most fans didn\u2019t even catch it!<\/p>\n

During the pop star\u2019s December 10 appearance on The Late Show<\/em>, Stephen casually congratulated her on her engagement to Travis Kelce<\/strong><\/a> \u2026 then instantly backtracked. The moment flew by so quickly that viewers hardly noticed anything was off.<\/p>\n

But on December 11<\/a>, etiquette trainer Myka Meier posted a now-viral Instagram video explaining that the host had actually committed \u2014 and then corrected \u2014 a classic wedding faux pas.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, who else saw this one?\u201d Myka says in the clip. \u201cThis is when Stephen Colbert\u2026 says to Taylor Swift on a show, \u2018Congratulations on getting engaged.\u2019 And then he quickly realizes that he\u2019s made a faux pot and he actually teaches her wedding etiquette. And he says, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m so sorry. I shouldn\u2019t have said that. Because traditionally it\u2019s bad etiquette to say congratulations to a bride because you sort of imply she kind of like got the big one. Congratulations.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cInstead, you\u2019re supposed to say, \u2018best wishes\u2019 to the bride-to-be, and then you only say \u2018congratulations\u2019 to the couple once they are married. So what do you all think about this? Do we still practice this? Do you think this is old school? What do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n

The comment section made it even clearer that most people had no idea this rule existed. One user wrote, \u201cWow. Never heard of this. And would not have thought ANYTHING if someone said congratulations to me when I got engaged\u2026 I think it\u2019s the thought that counts.\u201d Another joked that they learned the rule \u201cfrom Emily Gilmore on Gilmore Girls.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor and Travis announced their engagement on August 26 in an adorable joint Instagram post showing the Kansas City Chiefs star proposing in a flower-filled garden. \u201cYour English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married \ud83e\udde8,\u201d they wrote as the caption.<\/p>\n

Taylor was glowing during her Late Show appearance \u2014 and not just because of the new ring.<\/p>\n

\u201cGetting engaged to the love of my life, getting all my music back,\u201d she said. \u201cThose were two things that just might never have happened. They could have just never happened. It wasn\u2019t like, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s just a matter of time.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cBoth of those things could have just never arrived in my life, and I\u2019m so grateful for both of those things happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
