Kevin Costner<\/strong><\/a> spoke candidly about his Christian faith after narrating the ABC TV special Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Deseret News<\/em><\/a>, published on Monday, December 8, Costner, 70, said it was \u201cappropriate\u201d that he served as the two-hour TV special\u2019s narrator given his devout faith.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been a part of all kinds of stories, but to be able to narrate the birth of Christ, it seemed appropriate to me, given my history with the church,\u201d Costner said. \u201cI was raised in a church. I haven\u2019t probably proclaimed that to the world, but anybody who knows me, knows that. It\u2019s been so much a part of my life \u2014 religion that has spread around this world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The outlet stated that Costner\u2019s \u201cfirst performance\u201d was as a four-year-old in his church\u2019s \u201cannual nativity play\u201d where he played a shepherd and uttered a single line: \u201cHark.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a trailer<\/a> for the special, which aired on ABC on Tuesday, December 9, Costner asked for audiences to revisit the first Christmas with him. \u201cThey say Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. A chance for families to gather together and celebrate the amazing story of a new born king,\u201d Costner tells the camera while seated in a director\u2019s chair. \u201cWhether you\u2019re a believer or just curious about the tradition, journey back with me, Kevin Costner, for the story of the first Christmas like you\u2019ve never seen it before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Expanding on his beliefs, the Yellowstone<\/em><\/a> star told the outlet that he believes the story of Jesus Christ is \u201cincredibly special.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cYou choose to believe. I choose to believe \u2014 that doesn\u2019t mean I know how to defend it when someone can come at me from different directions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Costner said, \u201cImagine the idea that [Mary\u2019s] unwed, she\u2019s pregnant. There\u2019s a level of shame that goes with that. There\u2019s a boy just your same age. Now, there\u2019s also this, this deep-seated fear, because there was always a promise that this person was coming, that would change the world and the idea that as a young girl, that you\u2019re somehow (part of) this whole thing, that had to be overwhelming for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
